There's a similar thing in the UK which I hate: it's called "Penny for the Guy". People parade an effigy of Guy Fawkes that's going to be burnt on bonfire night (Nov. 5th) and ask people for money to buy fireworks etc. But often the "guy" is not worthy of any donation. I was once walking down the street with a friend and these kids wheeling something in an old pram accosted us and said "Penny for the guy!". My friend looked the effigy up and down and said, "that's not a Guy, that's an upside down teddy bear". And it was!
