Like I said I dont know much about Jazz. I thought Jazz was more slowpaced with drums, more melodic. To be honest the way Sentaro played and the way Buddy Rich played is totally not my taste since its too random in my eyes (which it is of course since Jazz is about the feeling). I like my music more in order which is quite a disadvantage nowadays since music is getting more and more chaotic and with weird sounds inbetween.

I never knew that Jazz is a cultural melting pot, I always thought Hiphop is that. To be honest the only thing I really knew about Jazz is "they have saxophons".

QUOTE I like my music more in order which is quite a disadvantage nowadays since music is getting more and more chaotic and with weird sounds inbetween.

So that to me sounds like you like the format most rock/pop songs follow. I.e Verse Chorus Verse Chorus Verse Chorus or instead of a third verse repeat chorus x2. Nothing wrong with that since that what the Beatles established as the conventional format for modern song to follows.

All im trying to point out is whatever you like you can expect that genre to owe something to Jazz.

As for today's music, it is not that it is more chaotic, it is just that music has lost it's identity and is over saturated with a lot of people trying to find a new sound in order to become commercial and make a living. I do think that some of the emerging artist are good at blending sounds nicely together. The only problem is there is a complete dearth of genuine lyrical content. But that is more about how disposable society has become and music is just reflecting that.

QUOTE (julezia @ Apr 15 2012, 08:53 PM) Did anyone else notice the similarities between the two noitaminA shows airing this spring? Both feature main characters that are transfer students that have gone through the process of transferring many times in the past and they both suffer from panic attacks because of social anxiety. I felt a sense of deja vu watching this one after Tsuritama. The main characters were also cured of their panic attacks (perhaps temporarily?) by getting hit with some water.... one in the rain and the other from a mysterious water gun (contents unknown but highly suspicious)
blink.gif

It might be a coincidence.. and there is a 99% probability that it is, but there is 1% chance that Noitamina is in fact a secret organization bent on controlling the world, has a number of its people within some studios and is trying to brainwash and turn us into their loyal slaves! O_O

Aside from the whole conspiracy thing, I watched the first two episodes today, and boy this was awesome. The art is a bit peculiar but not in a bad way. It has a fair amount of humor without being over-the-top, the characters are interesting. I hope we do get more background info on all of them though, but the atmosphere this show gives is hinting me that we will get that covered for us.
In the first episode I was kinda worried this might turn into a bromance show like some here, so its good that they cleared that up pretty fast. Rain is awesome though. I had quite a number of memories, and quite recent ones too about just walking in the rain and standing in it... without an umbrella or anything else to cover myself with. Interesting thing is, when you down rain seems to amplify that feeling to a certain extent, and same when you feel good/happy/cheerful/positive - wonder why the human brain perceives water that way.
The Jazz session was - marvelous, haven't heard such good, non-experimental music in an anime since I watched Nodame. Hope there are going to be lots and lots more of great jazz pieces.

Wonder whats with Sentaro being special -> he can wear his cross at all times\ has to. Is he planning to be a priest or something else church related? That was kinda weird. The girl he saved from those delinquents had a cross on as well, I think.

So with ep 2 the love-triangle-route is as good as dead since Sentaro fell in love with the newappeared beauty. Not that I believed in the love-triangle-route to begin with since Ritsuko is obviously not in love with any of those two.
Ritsuko was really hot in her onepiece bikini and I dont mind one bit that it was oldschool since you know what looks good looks good right? And everythings better than school-swimsuits anyway.

The jazz this time was a lot better, I really liked it this time.

The triangle was pretty unlikely to begin with, I think.

As for the show itself, well for now it seems like a more or less a typical music show. Not a music style I'm crazy about, so I probably won't like it as much as did, say, Nodame, but I guess jazz fans deserve a treat, too.

One thing I'm kinda worried about is where it'll go plot-wise. Now that the introductions are over, they need a real plot, because a slice-of-life slow show with sessions at the end of the ep can only go so far. I'm guessing we'll get some sort of crazy romance spin with Sen and that long-haired girl, but we'll see.

Ok mixed feelings about this episode. Ultimately, I enjoyed it and that is mainly due to Nishimi.

I am a very blunt person and even growing up watching American shows with those cliched scenes of guys and girls struggling to get it on, I have never related to that kind of stuff. Realistically, in the real world they are going to be broken up in a matter of months. So is the agony even worth it to begin with?

Saying that Sentaro asking Yurika on a date was funny. At times the melodramatics was a tad too thick. The episode was saved by a fun live session and Nishimi laying his cards on the table. I admire that. Which brings me to Ritsu who was the cause of conflict. It is okay to secretly habour feelings for another but not when faffing about with emotions needlessly ruins perfectly decent relationships. Life can be simple if people make it so. So hopefully she will pluck up some courage and tell Sentaro how she feels. Even if she get rejected at least it is out there so everybody knows the deal.

One last thing, what was Sentaro and Yurika doing, a bit of live modelling? Or striking one off the bucket list... canoodling in the school. Your only young once.

I'm more concerned that this show is starting to move along the "school love drama with a gimmick" route. The gimmick is the music, of course. I'm hoping that we see something more interesting and less typical in the coming eps. So far, the show is falling far behind today's "music show standard".

Wow what a development. Who wouldve thought that Kaoru had it in him to confess like that and so fast on top of it. You have to respect him for that, especially because he knows he has no chance.

Im a bit disappointed at Yukari. Not of her personality or anything, no because her well dont know how to name it, probably background. I mean she is just a senpai and after ep 2 I totally thought she would be at least an university student. That wouldve spiced the show up a bit more.

@franzoir: Its defenitely live modelling since Yukaris a painter.

A pretty nice third episode. It is starting to get awkward for the three friends. Kaoru's confession is bound to have some reactions. Sentaro probably will get mad or something about Ritsuko getting hurt. And then maybe Ritsuko has her confession to Sentaro. This sure will have some influence on the music part.

QUOTE Not that I believed in the love-triangle-route to begin with since Ritsuko is obviously not in love with any of those two.

Wrong...she proved she is a woman after all and one who has only ever loved the one she considers her "best and dearest friend" that is, until a "fly landed in the ointment" and what a fly too...who really knows if Sen-kun loves her? (the new girl, I mean) I mean infatuation can really play tricks on one's innocent heart and I, for one, am glad the boys are still innocent in the ways of love and women...no hanky-panky for them! Nope...it is all about first loves, earnest yearnings and full-on sexual desire, and all in their proper time, too.
wink.gif

In the meantime, let's be subjected to said desires as they take it out on the piano and the drums...let that cool sound flow from deep within and seduce all who are within hearing range.

And less melodrama, hopefully. I kind of prefer that to be secondary in my music shows.

Your music shows?

I highly doubt you will get what you wish for since melodrama is gonna play until they settle the score between who wants who and why...in the meantime, the piano will sing and the drums will roll. Can't wait!

Just like K-ON or Macross Frontier I wouldnt call this a music show. Its just a slice-of-life show with some jazz.

@Yaya: I must say that I was quite surprised that Ritsuko was in love with Sentaro, but that was my fault. How could I believe that this show doesnt go into chliches and whatnot.

Oh come now, Ossi-san....I can't believe you had the wool pulled over those sharp anime eyes of yours...you never miss a thing and yet, there she was, in love the whole time...it was no surprise to me at all but then again me being female and just as sharp as you, well...that might be it.

Many men seem to fail when it comes to reading women between the lines and if this series plays that card, so what?
I seem to recall that when I created the thread for this one, one of the genres did say romance...now, me being a music lover, there is no way some good looking boy is gonna escape some good looking girl's eyes...and if he be a music lover too, why all the more enticing. And so it came to be...romance and jazz and a pet pigeon named Sarah Vaughn...my boy's got it going on.

You can put me in the group that's not disappointed with the developments of the third episode. In all honesty I didn't really realize that Ritsuko was in love with Sentaro either before this episode. I'll reference a previous episode where Ritsuko complimented Kaoru by calling him handsome or something to that extent. I didn't think of it as just an innocent stroke your manhood comment at the time and just assumed that she was somewhat interested in him. So I was surprised just like Kaoru when she started to show those slight expressions of jealousy towards Yukari and Sentaro during the double date. It does reaffirm the lesson that in anime never overlook the unrequited or secret childhood friend's love angle.

I also found myself respecting Kaoru more for not letting his feelings remain a secret and letting it turn into a couple more episodes of angst... tip-toeing around the whole should or should I not game... Oh yeah about the question is this a music anime? I would say it is because it plays a prominent part in the show so far. They clearly try to make jazz something you relate this anime with. The anime Beck also had an underlying love story but you would consider that a music anime as well correct? You can have both and one or the other doesn't have to be the gimmick imo.

"So this is a dress rehearsal... No it's the real performance."
And you would think a guy could score off that line

Yep...it was well played too until Ri-chan laid her eyes on her rival and I knew then and there...but already had my suspicions. There is just no way one girl can be devoted to one guy and not love him and hope for his love in return...been there-done that...she is smart and cute and out going, I am sure she may have been confessed to but she loves someone who she thought would love her too...ah! Love!
Anyway, I am sure once the next two ot three episodes blow over, we will be back on track so let's see where we go from there...the gang is mature enough to handle this major bump in the road unless the new girl proves to be some rich daddi's girl who won't really set her sights on Sen-kun and plays him for a fool...I hear a set of torch songs coming up! Sarah Vaughan style too...
That line K-kun spoke was one beautiful line...let's hope Ri-chan remembers it when the chips are down and things do not go her way.

The way Ka-kun was working those piano keys Ri-chan might wanna switch her man-crush before too long. Reminds me somewhat about that conversation we had about ~slow hands~ and changing to different tempos so to speak but errr it's probably best not to delve too deep into all that on this family-friendly forum

I was a little surprised that Yukari had Sentaro doing the whole nude male modeling thing so soon. I suspect she's going to be playing sweet music, one fine tune, with our little drummer boy before too long if you catch my drift.

Shall I play for You
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
On my drum, on my drum

Then He smiled at me
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
Me and my drum

When we come
Me and my drum
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum

Oh, I agree...as a woman, if it was up to me to choose, I want a real lover and not some bumbling log of a man. As much as I call Sen-kun a stud muffin, he lacks finesse with women; ignorant too, in the way of reading a woman's emotions, blind, in reading between the lines. Now, my first choice is the soft spoken, romantic, Karou-kun. I like a man who is quiet, observant, discreet, and respectful. I also like men who are in-tune with women, who can sense women and read them much like K-kun did Ri-chan when first he realized she was in love with Sentaro...no fuss, just watched over her and still, he did not mouth off to Sentaro so as to not give Ri-chan away...his playing that beautiful piece for her after taking so much time to arrange it to suit his style...and all just for her too. Now, that's a very thoughtful and very romantic man...stuff, great lovers are made of.

Maybe its possible that before Yukari came Ritsuko herself wasnt aware of her own feelings about Sentaro and then her feelings all came flooding in when she disappeared in the woods.

Sentaro already nude modeling is a surprise but on the other hand not. Its a surprise that Yukari went that far already but its not a surprise that Sentaro does it since he is totally under her thumb. Its like hes in trance or hypnotized. And from the beginning you could see whos the dominant one since Yukari was always selfconfident and outgoing what is almost nonexistent in Japan at their time. I get the feeling she will be dangerous, that look she gave him while he was nude screams troubles. If Ritsuko makes a move on Sentaro that will end with lots of blood, screaming and cursing.

Beck is the only series I could call a music series. And to be honest I cant even remember there beeing romance at all oO At least it had way more music than this one has.

I just watched the first 3 episodes of this magnificent series and I know about the pedigree producing this too, I've had my eye on this for a while.

The series is beautifully animated, the character design reminds me of House of Five Leaves somewhat but its great nonetheless.

From what I know, the manga has finished and that the series is more of the music but a lot of romance in the mix, which I'm glad it exists. I didn't realise that the series is set in the Summer of 1966, until I read the wiki page, I knew it was set in the past but not that long ago. Apparently...**SPOILER** one more person is going to join to cause a love polygon.

The manga finished earlier this year with 9 volumes (3 of which have been scanlated) and hopefully the anime gets a conclusive ending.
