The COMPLETE story:
QUOTE ShoPro named as Naruto licensor
anounced on 2005-02-15 14
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SHOPRO ENTERTAINMENT NAMED
MASTER LICENSOR FOR JAPANESE PHENOMENON, NARUTO

TV TOKYO Corporation And Shueisha Inc. Appoint ShoPro Entertainment To Represent TV, Home Video And Merchandising Rights In North America And Latin America For
Much Anticipated Ninja Hit, Naruto

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA (February 15, 2005) –ShoPro Entertainment, Inc. which recently announced it’s upcoming merger with VIZ, LLC to form one of the entertainment industry's most innovative, comprehensive manga and animation licensing and publishing companies, announced today that it has secured from worldwide licensors, TV TOKYO Corporation and Shueisha Inc., the television, home video and merchandising rights to Naruto for North America and Latin America. The appointment of ShoPro Entertainment as Master Licensor was facilitated by TV TOKYO Medianet, the licensing arm of TV TOKYO.

ShoPro Entertainment, the San Francisco based affiliate of ShoPro Japan, plans to introduce a dynamic roll-out strategy that will leverage the strong manga and entertainment brand into a broad licensing and marketing program. Naruto’s television broadcast partner and key licensing partners will be determined shortly.

“We are ecstatic about Naruto! It is a great privilege to be bringing such an outstanding property to the Americas,” said John Easum, Senior Vice President of ShoPro Entertainment. “Naruto became an explosive hit in Japan after it was first launched in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1999 and it continues to be an enormous success. Naruto has also established a very large American fan base through the US manga series published by VIZ. We anticipate a huge success.”

First introduced into the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in Japan in 1999, Naruto quickly became Japan’s most popular ninja manga. In 2000, Naruto was expanded into a series of graphic novels and is currently in its 26th volume, with nearly 49 million copies sold in total in Japan. Weekly Shonen Jump, published by one of Japan’s largest publishers, Shueisha Inc., is considered the world’s most successful comic magazine with over 3 million copies printed weekly in Japan alone.

Since 2003, the Naruto series has been serialized in the US edition of the monthly Shonen Jump, and published as a graphic novel series by VIZ, LLC. At retail, Naruto consistently ranks as one of the top graphic novel titles in the US and one of the most popular titles serialized in SHONEN JUMP. The manga has also been published in most major markets in Europe and Asia to great success.

Targeting tweens and teens, the Naruto animated series, produced by PIERROT CO., LTD. debuted in Japan in October 2002 on TV TOKYO and quickly established itself as one of TV TOKYO’s highest rated animated series. Today, Naruto is considered one of the most popular animated series in Japan’s history and has achieved immense success not only as a manga and TV title, but also in the realm of licensed categories such as toys, trading card games and video games.

The story of Naruto takes place in another world where ninjas are the ultimate power. In the village of Konohagakure live some of the stealthiest and most respected ninjas in the land. But 12 years prior, Konohagakure faced a fearsome threat - a nine-tailed fox demon, which terrorized the village and caused massive destruction before it was finally defeated. The Hokage, the village leader and most powerful ninja, was able to subdue the fox by sealing its soul inside the body of an orphaned baby boy. Now that boy, Uzumaki Naruto, has grown up to become a ninja-in-training, learning the art of ninjutsu with his classmates Sakura and Sasuke. The trio of student ninjas study under the instruction of their teacher, Kakashi. With Kakashi, the group faces a series of dangerous and daunting tests and challenges. Through their adventures, the young ninjas learn the importance of friendship, teamwork, loyalty, hard work, creativity, ingenuity, and right vs. wrong.

The key characters are Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. Naruto, shunned by the village because he bears the taint of the fox demon imprisoned within him, is a rascally orphan who has grown into an attention-seeking troublemaker. Although his preoccupation with playful pranks leaves him struggling to graduate from Ninja Academy, he's determined to become the next Hokage. Sasuke, the top student in Naruto’s class, comes from the prestigious Uchiha clan. Sasuke is driven by a secret desire to win revenge against a mysterious person who wronged him in the past. And the smart and studious Sakura is
the brightest of Naruto’s classmates, but she is constantly distracted by her crush on Sasuke. She hopes to some day win Sasuke’s heart…if Naruto doesn’t get in the way.

I really dont think that a little licensing will stop fans and subbers from doiing what they love to do. I still think that someone somewhere will still be getting episodes off of tokyo tv and will give them to the public. Its just like all the other lisenced material like DBZ and fma that people still have available on their sites and yet no one has come after them. And besides doesnt that mean they have lisenced all the old episodes? I dont think that the have the licenses for all the new episodes that are about to come out on tokyo tv so, in that essience we are safe.

awww, just when the story is getting pretty interesting..

oh well looks like FTV wont be hosting naruto nemore.. i dont really mind that because we can always get new eps from narutomania .. but one thing worries me.. i heard beck is going to get licensed too.. lets hope its just a rumor

I agree it won't stop AONE subbing it alone since they tend to ignore licenses and new groups will popup from the underground to fill the void.

That doesn't make it right

In principle Fansubbers are meant to stop regardless of that. Their goal is to introduce the latest anime in order to get it licensed.

Similar situtation like when Inuyasha was licensed, it didn't stop the show being subbed to the end some 30 eps later.

EDIT: went to have a look at ShoPro's website because I was sure I've heard of them before; sure enough they they've been involved in the licensing of quite a few titles like Inuyasha, Hamtaro and such. An eye opener on there though is Doraemon, has that show actually made it to the states? If so,since when?

AHAHAHHAHA

seriously i hate naruto..
this is quite entertaining to see one of the biggest animes of japan being licensed.

i'm enjoying naruto a lot, and i'm starting to watch a very, VERY promising part of the story (that started on episode 109) so i definitely hope it'll remain easy to download naruto.. i can't wait to get more episodes, and i hope the batch episode file i was d/lding didn't die..

/jp

like I said before there is absolutely NO WAY IN HELL that the people lisencing these anime shpows are gonna catch every person fan subbing and / or gonna do anything about it. funimation stopped trying to prosecute people for the dbz series a while ago. (at least I havent heard of anyone getting prosecuted) and theres no way that there wont be any way to get the new episodes. SINCE i highly doubt that they are lisencing the episodes that arent even out in japan yet. I bet they will always be behind in the series so I think we are good to download the newest ones just not the older ones.

some will stop probably, its pretty much guarenteed the atleast one or 2 will still sub it lol...

Same DD!!

This sucks... I totally love that serious!!! *Starts to cry*

Personally, I have every ep in AVI format, by ANBU-AonE, and the Jump Festas, and now they're all gonna die *waaaaaaa*

Well, lets hope you are right akiraand even its licenced and all, a group stands ahead and continue to sub the serie... but that doesnt mean ppl wont buy the DVDs when they are out... I support the companies buyng original material, but since Naruto is a long serie, I wanna see it all of it first and then with time, I buy them...

QUOTE ("Sasha from Bleach 17 thread")Yeah. I enjoyed the latest Naruto manga, too. But the anime is soooo gay... I've read the manga and I know exactly what's going to happen. But it's still predictable. The manga is still good though.

Which is it?
wink.gif

i hope anbu - aone don't give up, i'm definitely happy with their fansubs.. and after having 110+ episodes by them i'd like to get as many as possible!

the good news so far is that the batch torrent i was getting didn't die yet
wink.gif
let's hope it doesn't.. i won't finish it before thursday, maybe friday..

Waaaahhhh!!

I love Naruto, both anime and manga, but the anime isn't going very far...

Oh well. It was good while it lasted.

YES! Finally its lisenced.

I dont see why people make such a big fuss about the lisencing. The best thing about it is that it increases the popularity of the anime (and anime in general) to the main public and it greatly increases the chances of it coming to the Netherlands. (although those chances are still extremely small)

QUOTE > Naruto "licensed" by ShoPro Entertainment
On February 15 ShoPro Entertainment announced it was appointed the main licensor for Naruto in the USA. This has lead many to claim Naruto has been licensed. However AnimeSuki sees ShoPro only has a middle-man and not an anime company which releases anime themselves. As such we're not marking it licensed yet. Please note that this situtation may change at any time. Also the ShoPro "license" means Naruto is now much more likely to be licensed in the US, especially by VIZ.
( discuss this topic on the AnimeSuki Forum )

right now i'm not too interested in seeing naruto licensed because of a few reasons:

- it'll still take a long ass time to come to portugal
- i've seen most episodes, and even if it started airing in portugal tomorrow i couldn't wait that long to see the episodes 120+
- it'll make subbers go away (ANBU is leaving, fortunately AKeep isn't -- at least not yet)
- episodes might be harder to get

but yes, selfishness aside it's great to see it licensed.. and it might very well become huge. dubbing will ruin it though
