I personally do not smoke but may drink occasionally (only in the parties but not for leisure).
I've read a newspaper article a while ago, by briefly saying that, saving up the money you spend on the cigarette and alcohols or beers in approximately two years most, you could possibly buy a nice sport car like a Porsche or a giant house (Newspaper actually used real figure by sum up the average expenditure of each person spend in a year).
I don't get the ideas that some people do not have any intention to quit just due to the effect of addiction, I mean addiction may be difficult to overcome for a period of time, but on the other hand if you succeed drive off the addiction, obviously you may get a fresh life again. I also wouldn't call this a hobby if it is highly hazardous to yourself!
