On one hand, there are no sexual activities but it still kinda feels like girls are being used?
I dunno, it might be an easy way to earn money for a girl and stuff but I just really dislike such services XD

Same with host clubs. Even though there is a male version in this. But for girls, compared to otaku gaming, you can wear nice dresses and drink expensive champagne all night with your customers and earn big money with it..

I would feel like the girls were being used if they didn't enjoy gaming and such. I wouldn't mind being paid to play games, as long as there isn't any funny business. It definitely beats being a stripper and waiting on tables. In a way the guys are being used too, for their moneys~

Well it's not just gaming, I mean a lot of other weird actions you can pay such girls for , I mean wtf laying your head on her lap and have her clean your ears wtf xD

I could be wrong but I can hardly imagine any girls who are genuinely eager to walk around in a cosplay suit and act all cute for an otaku. XD I mean, I'd get all freaked out knowing that guy is probably thinking all this weird stuff in his head and all you can do is watch the timer and make sure you receive those yens XD

That is pretty much an escort. Some call them high class prostitutes. Difference is you are paying for their time which could involve social functions, companionship, talking about your feelings etc. Sexual activites may or may not be involved.

In the case of the link, its just kinda sad the world is becoming so isolated that you need to pay someone to play videogames with you. Im sure if people looked around and made friends they would find plenty of people (male or female) who would play video games with you for free. But atlas everyone wants the easy way. Why make friends when you can buy them.

I personally would feel embarassed to use that service. I would imagine the girls would be thinking im such a loser.

I don't want to be a stick on the mud, or like I'm so kind of big shot, but this is kinda pathetic... I mean, why? Why would anyone use those services. I mean how lonely must you be....

Would your friends dress up in your favorite type of anime character while playing games with you? XDD

Some of Japan's area are packed with host clubs. I've read an article about it once and some girls, depending on popularity, really earn a lot of money. They buy nice expensive stuff of it or save up for college even though they get so addicted to the money they won't quit easily.
It really is an empty living. Some say so themselves. The thought of having to drink tons of alcohol and please your customers with a fake smile wouldn't make me happy.

Well if the chicks are hot, and the booze it's good. I could live with it. >..>

But in a way prostitution is understanble. I mean guy/girl wants an affair, or you just cant get laid, but to pay someone to write you a love letter? send you a txt with pic? play games with you?

I'm sorry, but that's pathetic man.

That's something I would not do~ But I do enjoy gaming and dressing up... Guys may already look at you anyway and think strange things when you are out about on normal occasions. I always tend to dress a little different anyway so I'm used to stares but it's not just guys, it's also sweet old ladies~ My town has a lot of old people... Anyway~ I don't care what they would be thinking. This actually reminds me of what I read the other day here.

This thing isn't a career but as side job (keep out the freaks~), especially to pay off college... I can't blame those type of girls. It's not exactly the first place I'd recommend though, I'll extremely ill with stacks of medical bills, yet I could earn money from photography/modeling (when I'm well enough for that again).

I wouldn't want to send anyone off who would be uncomfortable in that position but hey~
It's Japan! There are quite a lot of female otaku girls who would like to be in that position, whatever floats their boat I suppose... It's a place I hope I'd never see my friends. (especially male friends)

I think that kind of dressing up is different from dressing up to please certain type of guys..
I'm used to stares too when I dress alternative, but I don't dress up for anyone else than myself. I'd feel rather uncomfortable in weird (naked) cosplay outfits to please guys especially if you know they are already playing weird fantasies in their heads in advance about you XD

If the girls aren't forced into it, some of them could actually enjoy the role-play aspect. It could really work both ways, with the girls getting a reality escape as well (but they get paid, while the guys have to pay). To some people, it could be a type of personal liberation. We really don't anything about the girls, so ...

That said, I still find this bizarre and pretty pathetic. Yes, escort services and the like have existed for a long time, but it seems people today are increasingly isolated and willing to pay for simple social interactions. (And it goes without saying, if the girls are being forced into unacceptable situations, then yeah, it does seem like they're being used.)

I don't think the girls are being used what so ever. The only way I'll agree that it is if the girls are forced into it. It is strange and we might even say it is pathetic for any guy to use such services but who knows, it might be just a form of entertainment. It doesn't seem like anyone is harm by it. I'll definitely use the service just because I'm curious about it. In the end, if no one is harm and everyone leaves happy, I say more power to all of them.

one of the reasons prostitutitution is such an evergreen success is, that it is so convenient. Most man, who go to a prostitute, could actually try to get to know an easy female, who is interested in some fun only. So why dont they? Because it is too much trouble. It is so much easier to go to a prostitute, there is no excess talking, no pretending to be a better guy, you can skip this entire get to know you "nonsence" and get right to the business. Also when you pay for the service, you are the boss, you can make demands and the prostitute has to go along with it.

To compare a gamer call girl with a prostitute is a little exaggerated. I think this is about compagnionship in most cases. Well, there are different ways to earn money, I personally would find it demeaning to do this job, but nobody forces me, nor the girls.

The reason for the ear cleaning thing is that it's a traditional Japanese intimate thing that people do for one another (e.g. wives doing it for husbands). I don't understand the appeal of it myself but it crops up in s few anime and manga. So it's not some creepy thing really. IIRC there's an example in Karin where Karin's mum does it for her husband.

Noshi, if you really want to earn €10/hour for some pervy pasttime (which I suspect is your real motive for starting this thread) you are welcome to cosplay A.Oryzae for me whilst feeding me glasses of warm sake.

The person providing the service is trying to make ends meet as any other person, why would s/he perform any service for free?.

so you might say, but she is a prostitute pretending for money... I disagree, Escort services difference from prostitution in that: there is consent on both parts, and there is no obligation to intimacy, also they tend involve common social activities.

People tend to send things from japan way out of context. The problem is japan reacheda level of social and technological maturity extremely fast, so we westerners get all wound up on things that are actually pretty normal... These services appear first in japan because of their high value on how people perceive you, for example: when you die, your family contracts Professional mourners that cry rivers over your casket/urn/whatever, the more mourners you get the more your family loved you or your community valued you.

thinking like this, is all about how you and the people around you perceive you, so how much different is; to pay a girl to be by your side and make you feel like a stud/casanova/lady's man if you lack the time or skills necessary to accomplish it the old fashion way, to pay for people to mourn you when you die?

is it really that different from the people that spend thousands of dollars in surgery because they aspire to an ideal of beauty that nature can not accomplish?
or that spend huge amounts of money getting a trophy car, a trophy wife and trophy kids... the only difference i can see is where, how and when the money was spent, not on the final product

You should get someone to do it to you. As long as they're not poking too deep, it's simply two-thumbs-up awesome.

Whahahah stupid Hiroyuki

your randomness never fails surprising me lol
I don't wanna imagine pervy time in A. Oryzae cosplay and sake XD

@b.o.w I think no one linked these services to prostitution.
I think the difference in the western/japanese points of view is that Japanese are generally more shy and held back in their social activities and contacts.
Japanese businessmen visiting Hostess clubs to get their fix is just a way to escape the harsh days from work and have contacts with girls without having to commit to them. Same with rich girls wanting to be spoiled by the perfect bf which they -think- to find in host clubs.
They can come and go whenever they want, leave presents/money whenever they want but they don't have to be bothered with usual obligations they'd normally have with a wife/girlfriend or husband/boyfriend.

I think in western countries most people would think: why pay a random girl to play video games with you when you can just play some with your friend. I agree that Japan reached a level of social and technology but as a result many guys (or girls) tend to mix them up or bring the fiction to reality. They prefer cute anime characters over real life girls. Maybe these otakus just don't like real girls at all. I've seen it before, telling all these negative things about Japanese girls having high standards and being mean if you don't apply to the standards at all.
