Yeah, same studio involved in their 'working series' like Shirobako and Hanasaku Iroha... or so the Wikipedia entry says.. and I liked both SoL's ... just started watching Sakura Quest.... the setup with the old guy in charge of the tourist bureau seems a wee bit stupid.... but there's an undercurrent of pathos as well given the situation with towns like this in Japan, and around the world when urbanization reaches its peak and empties out the countryside... though this is supposed to be a town large enough to have a bus service etc... and they had this tourist attraction going for a decade or two back in the 'bubble' years of the 80's... so it probably faded out through the 90s as that bubble popped... interesting to see her memory of being crowned as a kid there.. only finished ep2 so far, 2 more to go.... I wonder if that gets mentioned... so many towns are in this situation, I've read about some of them trying to keep their population, especially the under 30 age group... to sustain business etc... or fade out.... not really any different here in the States where I'm at.... the schools have half the student population.... a few more homes, but less people/kids in them etc.. here in the States, if it wasn't for all the immigration, it'd be about the same as Japan... same with Europe etc.... civilizations rise and fall in this pattern.... which gives this attempt by this town that pathos I mentioned.... they are trying to do the impossible.. essentially... not that cities really have much more, just more of everything... thus the magnetic pull of those seeking jobs etc... more variation as well... more stress as well. 25 eps? I kinda of wonder how this will end more than anything else.... as it is rare for any town like this to succeed in finding some niche to market itself... Interesting... so far, just a scattering of males as well... everyone is on the slow path.... like so many rural SoL's... which is realistic as well.... interesting to see what they do with this... I remember there was a short anime actually put out by some city for this kind of purpose to market itself... like some products have done...  Maybe Tokyo 10.0 will occur and people will realize Tokyo isn't the place to be when TSHTF? ^_^

PS... just finished ep 4.... ep3 right away had a mention that most towns fail in this attempt to attract tourists.... and ep 4 is starting to deal with the girls personal issues/situations, along with the townsfolk...rather realistic which is a little surprising, but then this situation has been an issue for these towns for over 2 decades, and there really isn't much they can do about it. Marketing can only do so much, it can't make something special that isn't.... it can only help sell the product, not create it. Again, rather realistic... adding to that pathos.

also a nice ep.5 how the queen leader Yoshino encourages Sanae, as minister of lT asking some town 'weirdos' to help too ;p... Kazushi's woodcarving was useful after all, maybe that 'Sakurada' mistake is pun for Sagrada Reset? did you try it :)

Yeah, and ep 6 has a small budget film being made.... again, rather realistic, as small budget stuff is done everywhere they can do it cheap.... the angle of getting rid of the house is interesting... using the needs of the film company to help them offset the cost of the demo the city would have to expend... the keep dropping these little realistic bits all over the place, even with the characters... interesting, not exciting, but that's rather realistic as well.... though not very entertaining, more like a drama... which again, demonstrates that it's best to watch 3-4 eps at a time, otherwise these types of episodes drag it all down..... setup for later eps. The whole series could end up being like this.... rather realistic,  not the typical fare, that's for sure.... not melodramatic, not moe, not anything but realistic.... which is itself, rather different.

yes Shiori didn't want that part of her childhood erased, so Yoshino asks them its late owner's name in credits too... Also ep.7 focuses at Maki's past deciding to act again, would be nice if both films are released as 0VAs like Shirobako :P

They ended this small budget film shoot rather well in this last ep... realistic.. the whole show is rather realistic with the usual anime characters as an overlay... if that tourist bureau remains this helpful, they will get a reputation as a film friendly site.... not sure if Japan has a state/provincial/national film office with subsidies or not... but like any town/city, if you aren't someplace special, you have to 'work it' to keep up the economy, as only the federal govts can 'print' money to finance themselves without cost... debt... fake money... for a fake economy... Tokyo as the capital city is fed on it like most capital cities... like any addict, they don't realize they have a problem... they still haven't gotten rid of that bad bank debt... aka zombie banks... from the 90s... USA is doing it now, same with EU area, China is about caught up as well. These elements are presented rather well in this show.... so far this realistic undercurrent has been maintained... not used to seeing this in any format... dramas are the usual outlet, and they really don't talk about these problems here in the States... part of the propaganda pattern... so thick these days, found in every little market, as the locals just repeat the national tv feed... same BS... but these smaller towns/cities have to deal with reality as the big ones don't, as they can't usually just give themselves free debt money... They have to get creative and think up real solutions as this town in Sakura Quest is doing... and all of them are trying to do the same thing... thus the usual competition between them to attrack companies for jobs, especially in older abandoned or just empty buildings etc....  most developed nations are facing the same situation of having reached their peak in the cycle and are now on the downward part of the curve... .less kids, schools need to close... less jobs as companies outsource overseas etc.... add in the transfer to digital online services, which again are state subsidized by debt, the biggest ones get all the free money.... thus on WallStreet the 'FAANGS' get all the action...pumped up as the entire rest of the stocks have already turned down.... the coming collapse is inevitable.... not if but when.... which many are starting to say is late summer to fall.

Oh well.... it's interesting to see this portrayed realistically in this manner.. not done here in the States at all(that I know of), gotta keep the illusion alive as long as possible... but these towns have to deal with the reality of their situation, especially as the downward pattern picks up pace... the main cities like Tokyo sucking up all the action... attracting all the talent, jobs etc... but also sucking out all the life from the nation... which hasn't been mentioned in this anime yet... I doubt they will, that is asking too much and gets very political.... doubt the producers want to go in that direction, but it is the undercurrent pulling them all down the drain... for 3 decades now.... the  new 'norm'... this pattern is found in most developed nations, but immigration hides it here in the States for the most part.... debt... most states, like the federal govt is living on debt, same with most companies... buying up their own stocks to pump up earnings per share valuations.... and using fake accounting to hide the rest... none of which can last forever.... and they know it... but the central banks keep the game going with free money... taking turns, one after the other... like a game of musical chairs... waiting for the music to stop.... usually the fed govt will take their country to war to hide this... which the USA has been doing for a very long time.

This anime could get into the less glamorous aspects of the problem, which is maintenance costs.... of all the infrastructure of decades past... perhaps centuries... new projects always bring in new revenue... but everything else just brings in maintenance costs... as systems age and need repair or replacement... roads, sewers, etc... health care costs increase... etc. I doubt they will  get into it here, but they could just mention it as another backdrop or background element to the town's/cities problems.... getting into the assets and liabilities of their town/city and its environment etc.... usually a town/city in this situation accumulates a bunch of little projects/companies/etc that add up to a whole that keeps the economy and city going... like a hearth fire.... needing to be kept stoked to keep it alive... only the capital cities can ignore so much of this by using their central bank to fund it all in debt... the usual corrupt cycle that enventually collapses the entire system.... until it resets..... usually after a major war or Act of God type destruction...

All of this is background to the story if you know about it.... whether they realize it or not.... usually the latter. Different take on the usual SoL, nice mix of comedy into the dramatic... I hope they can keep it going till the end. This is a one season only project, right?

I guess because Shirobako just got 1 (24 eps of 2 cours), about projects now is what new dish will attract tourists... that bureau must solve it dealing with the merchants' event so surely Shiori will, starring her in ep'8 along sister x chef ;)

So, 24 eps? that should be more than enough... as this situation in the town/city that so many face is dependent upon the same thing... if you don't have something others need: location, resources, etc... then you have to find a niche... be it a product, access to whatever... hard to say... depends upon where this city is supposed to be and its position in terms of the regional and national economy etc. It will be interesting to see what they come up with... without a niche, you are essentially doing it day by day... everyday, every year.... that's why finding a niche is so important for anyone, any business, etc. The capital cities, empires etc can create their own by fiat... essentially, debt and all that implies... but the rest of the country has to deal with reality.... they have to earn it the old fashioned way... hard work.

well they just found one in ep.9 ;p Somen Mega Expo, Shiori is usually shy and lacks confidence but good at mediating... Now that I think about 'Doku' I guess Dokushima is a parody, 'doc' Emmett Brown from Back to the Future (5DX)

I'd have to check my list, but I think this one is the most original series in the lot... the writing has kept up and not gone trite etc... like most seem to suffer from. As for the last ep... that dating in the rural town... again, they kept it real.. only 3 women signed up for it....not a lot to set things up for, but it's the best such areas can get, and even then, one of them has an old boyfriend show up. <_<  And, of course, it isn't a shortage of women or men, but both usually in rural areas that are focused on agriculture espeically so. The Norweign guy is tied into the town now... explaining why he is there to begin with as well. I do like how this show is keeping it real and moving the plot along simultaneously... for a town... it's the best that can be done as the cities, especially the capital cities suck all the life out of the nation, as is done everywhere.

The writing is keeping the story moving around the cast as well.... featuring a different member of their group in each ep... I think. Nicely done.

Sakura Quest is rather normal SoL territory, but I find it interesting to see what they do with this concept of rejuvenation of the community.... as stated in the anime, all try, and they almost all fail in reestablishing their old mojo/gimmick/tourist attractions.... again, the concept is dealing with the reality of the situation so many communities face in Japan, especially villages that really have no jobs because the system of centralized power sucks in everything and everyone into its center, it's how all empires operate... not that creativity can't work in this or any case, but it does have to deal with the situation as is... Tokyo will continue that sucking of energy until it falls... as they all do... look at Washington DC/NYC/LA here in the States... yes, Chicago, Miami etc have their points, but its that East Coast 'Corridor' that is sucking in everything... even though, from the sound of it, it isn't as bad as Tokyo in Japan.. as we have some separation in different city centers operating different 'departments' of the empire... this is a reason the War Dept/DOD separated so many bases/facilities in different Congressional districts to secure funding... in the name of 'jobs'.. the usual excuse...
Just interesting to see this anime dealing with a real SoL situation in the country.... in an anime friendly manner of course, but still, reality isn't often dealt with. The solution, as presented so far, is usually the same when any entrepreneur is trying to do their thing in the marketplace.. they have to find a niche... either some product or service that others haven't thought of yet, or isn't cost effective for others due to resources etc. So far this anime seems headed to the more creative direction with the wood carvings, art work etc.. could lead to a more Bohemian art district affect, especially if the small city (as it appears, right?) isn't too far from Tokyo... which is my impression so far.

yup and ep.10 a matchmaking tour so this time not only was Ririko's past, bits about her parents but Sandal's too in #11... 1/8 manoyaman! Nice moral of its dragon girl tale, also Im glad their dance isn't 3DCG unlike other series lately :(

Catching up on this one... 25 eps, so this cour will be the end... and it remains well written, and that 'success' via the tv show's bringing in a pop rock band was similarly well written as it really wasn't 'successful' for the town... ie. the businesses in it... at least not yet... as such events, including the tv show, are one-time events and non repeatable... for the most part... unless some festival is started, which has to probably compete with others.... unless they go for a festival that is unique and not yet filling a niche... which is what it keeps coming back to for such locales as this town, finding a niche... otherwise, they are just another feeder town for Tokyo or whatever large city is nearby.... and most towns/small cities are in this category, the only difference being how close they are to a large city.... which could make them a suburb of sorts... if  not near at all, then population decreases by default in an economy based in automation etc....  Cities always suck up all the talent and energy of the provinces... that's how empires/kingdoms are made.

This anime is just plain REAL.... that 'Swedish' foreigner of sorts knowing the actual tune from that old dragon story.... the way only the band's appearance draws a crowd, which disappears at that contest once it's announced that the show will soon start.... to the last show having them take a break/vacation and getting back in touch with family/friends/work mates... which allows comparisons and reminders... simple, but effective writing while dealing with this larger issue of all those towns and small cities trying to survive in a nation/world that is designed to suck the life out of them.... though the other issue is the one that last episode presents with this 'queen' in her small hometown/city, which reminded me of the same one she's working in for a year... the time issue is presented here as well... which keeps in mind that this series is set for only 25 eps.... deadline approaching in more ways than one... for our 'queen', she seems to have graduated from school in Tokyo, but was unable to stay by finding a job there... while her sister back home seems content to stay there and make a life same as all those people back in the city she's working in.

All of these 'girls' seem to be in a similar situation, thus making them a team of like attracts like.... not everyone enjoys life in the capital city... some like the more rural life... but there aren't many  jobs there as industry has been centralized as well, more job losses... how to keep more energy/jobs in town/city? Not a 'one-size-fits-all' answer is usually the case, as each has to find their own niche or deal with their own situation depending upon their locale's pluses and minuses. This is one of those more adult animes that show up each season... there always seems to be at least one... SoL and usually rather dramatic though some comic elements are always added to keep out the gloom... .which is mentioned in that last episode as well when the 'queen' talks to her sister about life as an adult... just a couple of lines here and there in any story makes a big difference.

The Norweign guy is tied into the town now... explaining why he is there to begin with as well.

lol he knows there enough to win a trip in ep.13, best series this Summer?^_^

the series continues in the same 'real' fashion.... liked the bit with the older tourist guy in charge.... he seems to have had a real encounter with that critter Chupacabra... it would be nice if they mention what it is said to really be.... 'window faller'... from another dimension like other 'odd' characters in our history... Mothman, Spring Heel Jack etc.

Well, in the name of 'keeping it real', I present the following on behalf of this show:

Residents shaken after reporting chupacabra sightings in mountains of Riverside County, California
Beau Yarbrough
The Press-Enterprise

60266281.jpg
On a foggy morning more than a week ago, Cary Shuker's cat raced inside his Riverside home, terrified of something outside.

"This thing was standing out there, looking at me" said Shuker, a private contractor who lives at the base of Box Springs Mountain, which divides Moreno Valley and Riverside. "It was the ugliest looking thing."

Shuker said the hairless creature, glaring at him about 80 or 90 feet away, had a tail like a rat or a possum, with rippled pinkish skin, teeth jutting both up and down out of its jaws and was "at least two feet or more longer than the biggest coyote you've ever seen."

"I yelled at it, in a big deep voice, 'get out of here!'" Shuker said.

The creature turned and snarled at him, before stalking off. Before it vanished, it turned back toward Shuker, snarling and chattering one more time.

"It was cussing me out, basically. ... I stole its breakfast. It was hunting my cat," Shuker said. "This wasn't no coyote, by any means."

In the rocky Box Springs Mountain territory, residents say they believe that the strange wild animal they've encountered since the beginning of the year is the legendary chupacabra.

"I thought, 'That is the strangest looking animal I've ever seen,'" said M.J. Blunt, a retired child development consultant.

She saw the creature for the first time a year ago, eating fruit from a tree in a front yard of a nearby home.

"The ears of a deer, long snout, no hair, tail like a rat, long hindquarters," she said. "I thought it might be a sick coyote, a sick wolf. But it had too many different characteristics from any of them."

Chupacabra sightings first occurred in Puerto Rico in 1995, and were soon echoed throughout Latin America. Initial reports focused on the "goat suckers" preying on livestock. By 1996, The Press-Enterprise was reporting sightings in Fontana and Perris. In 2013, chupacabra sightings were reported in Redlands, northeast of Box Springs Mountain. Officials said the Redlands reports appeared to be of coyotes with mange.

Mange is a skin condition found in dogs and other canines, caused by scabies mites that burrow under the skin. When dogs (or coyotes) frantically scratch for relief from the itching, they eventually cause much of their hair to fall out.

Tom Brundige, an inventor of fire-resistant paint additives and insulation, first saw the creatures this past spring in an area burned in the Opera Fire in April.

"We're looking at it dead on. It has a body like a chihuahua, stretched out, with a large thoracic cavity," Brundige said. "And it has huge hind legs. It has a very narrow, ratlike face, with undulations in it, more like a marsupial."

The creature had a ratlike tail and a grayish black stripe on its midsection, he said.

"The donkeys that come from central Mexico, Texas, they come right through my gate," said Brundige, who has lived at the base of the mountain for 28 years. "These guys, I believe, followed them from central America."

He believes the creatures are a hybrid of a canine and a marsupial, like a kangaroo, and has dubbed them "canis marsupius."

"If you don't have a genus or species, (scientists) won't talk to you. It's a fairy tale," he said. "It's not."

Brundige is right: Animal control officials and academics are skeptical, at best, of their claims.

"The chupacabra is not a recognized species by the Department of Fish and Wildlife," said Andrew Hughan, spokesman for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. "Chupacabras are not a thing."

The department gets one or two calls a year from residents who say they've seen them, Hughan said.

"There is no such thing, except in the folklore of various communities," John Welsh, spokesman for Riverside County Animal Services, wrote in an email.

"Residents living in this area are right in the backyard of coyotes," Welsh wrote, "and the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park is not that far away either; there are bobcats and, in some rare circumstances, reports of a mountain lion in that area."

Coyotes, in particular, Welsh noted, are "constantly preying on small pets," like Shuker's cat.

All three witnesses say what they've seen is too big to be a coyote, which they're familiar with, along with other wildlife they've encountered in their decades living in the shadow of Box Springs Mountain.

"It sounds like the craziest, made-up story," Shuker said. "But it's not."
