I know it's not technically anime, but most certainly very asian/anime inspired. What do people think of Avatar: The Last Airbender?

I just got finished watching this series and after a few episodes I found it very hard to stop. Marathoned something like 20 episodes today, which was pretty much how I spent my entire day today, so that I could finish it before tomorrow when the sequel airs on TV. I'd say anybody who is a fan of those large adventure series with a ragtag group traveling around the world you should most definitely give Avatar a try.

It's got great characters that you're happy to see evolve over the course of the series, even if the writing can sometimes be a bit heavy handed about telling us what they are feeling. Also the show puts on some excellent looking fights with all sorts of elements flying around. Helps that I'm a sucker for worlds where people can wield the elements as I just think that's a really cool ability to have.

And Legend of Korra airs tomorrow morning which takes place 70 years after The Last Airbender which I am super excited for now. It's gonna make me feel like a kid again as I wake up to watch a Saturday morning cartoon.

Only bad thing now is I'm quite behind on the new anime as I've only watched maybe 2-3 episodes of the new stuff cause I was too busy with Avatar to watch anything else.

Barbo-san, both senpai-kun and I watched all of the Airbender series and loved it...welcome aboard! I wish I had the energy to go back and re-watch but there are so many good series this Spring plus, I still gotta take your advice and watch Cowboy Bebop. (have it all downloaded too, btw) I will keep an eye out for the Legend of Korra...thanks for the heads up, Barbo-san.

I gave Avatar: The Last Airbender a 10/10 back in 2008 or was it 2009?

So funny when I tried to tell you about the Legend of Korra coming out a few weeks ago you completely ignored my comment. But what's with this response to the Barbo of the flaming red?! I tell ya FTV girls are so fickle
laugh.gif

But yo Barbo I did the exact same thing when I got into the show. The majority of it was already completed and I found myself in full on marathon mode before I knew what hit me. I remembered being so surprised at how interesting the story was and how fun the characters were. For a long time I had seen commercials/ads about it and just wrote it off as a kid's show. While it can be viewed as that on some level its got so much more depth to it than a typical Saturday morning cartoon. It really does feel kinda like a Japanese anime and that's probably why it really appealed to me. I recorded the first episode of the Legend of Korra this morning and will give it a good strong viewing later today.

Yo! I am so sorry from the bottom of my most generous heart for having shafted you in complete ignore mode...I cannot even begin to understand as to why either...but you know you are adored and often, Ossan!
Here...my sentiments at the moment...

I wanna watch that show too...all I can find are streams. Send me a dl link, por favor?
Yep, a story that was superior in so many ways when compared to some of the tripe that is called anime these days...I loved Ang and company but had an "especially" soft spot for the troubled and noble Prince Zuko.

Avatar: The Legend of Korra Episodes 1-2 720p

AvatarTheLegendofKorraCover2.jpg

Summary: The new series takes place seventy years after the end of the Avatar: The Last Airbender story arc, with new characters and settings. The protagonist of the new series, Korra, the Avatar after Aang, is a hot-headed and rebellious young woman from the Southern Water Tribe who is "ready to take on the world." The series will follow Korra as she faces an anti-bender revolt while mastering the art of airbending from Aang and Katara's son, Tenzin.

My comments: Decided to go ahead and make this thread just in case some people want to follow along throughout the series. For those who are not aware this not an anime from Japan and that is why I'm putting it in the general discourse (don't feel like hearing arguments if I had placed it in the anime section). The show airs on Saturdays in America and is the second Avatar series.

Additional background info: The first series was called Avatar: The Last Airbender which aired for three seasons from 2005-2008. The series was created and produced by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who served as executive producers along with Aaron Ehasz. Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in an Asian-influenced world wherein some are able to manipulate the classical elements by use of psychokinetic variants of Chinese martial arts known as "bending." The show combined the styles of anime and American cartoons, and relied for imagery upon various East-Asian, Inuit, and South-American societies, with a brief reference to the Indic. (Wiki)

I just watched the first episode about an hour ago and it was a nice start. It's too bad that Aang's time as Avatar is over because he was a really great character. But since this story takes place seventy years after the events of the original Avatar series I guess a fresh main lead character was necessary. I'm impressed so far with Korra and in some ways she reminds me of Aang and his adventurous type nature. At first impression it seems she is the take action first and ask questions later kind of heroine -- which I myself happen to like. It was funny that she got arrested during her first visit to Republic City; it appears that being the Avatar and enacting your own justice isn't going to fly this time around. One of the things that stood out to me was how the times have advanced so much technology wise from the first series. The whole setting looked really nice. I'm going to catch the second episode tonight (it was a two-part episode premiere).

^ Gracias!

My heart aches to now know that dear Ang is not to be found among the living but his memory and his legendary accomplishments remain to be re-told to a 100th generation...Prince Zuko's too, for that matter.

Now, to episode two.

After I watch episode two...will add more thoughts. Went ahead and transferred this over...let's hope a few others partake of said series.

I thought the same about the world. In 70 years it feels like technology advanced so far. In my mind I attribute that to Toph's invention of Metalbending. No one had ever done it before her and I imagine she went and taught Metalbending to a lot of Earthbenders. I imagine the industrial output of the world skyrocketed after learning the technique as it was most likely so much more efficient than the old ways.

I really am missing so many of the old characters though, especially since I just finished the first series last night. Kinda disappointed that only 1 character from the old crew appears to still be alive. I was hoping to see Sokka and Suki as well as Toph. I'm gonna miss the excellent blind jokes that cracked me up every single time.

Edit: Also, I must reiterate what Aang's grandchild tried asking. What happened to Zuko's mother? Made me laugh and be frustrated at the same time when I realized that they didn't finish that last season.

Yeah and it's always amusing when the writers can take a shot at themselves knowing that the viewers can at least appreciate the irony or sarcasm of the comment. Sometimes you just don't have the time to fill in every single part of a story before the episode order runs out it would seem.

I finished up episode two and I've got a better feel for the show now which gave me an overall positive feeling about its prospects. First I wondered how this new age technological aspect would play in the new series. I have to say that it was pretty refreshing. While the bending part (for instance Korra's training or her fight against the gangsters) kept you in touch with the shows roots the new elements like the pro-bending sport was innovative & entertaining to watch. The action sequences during the matches looked pretty sweet and you just knew that somehow Korra was going to find a way to get in on the action. Thank goodness that just because she's the avatar didn't mean that should would immediately excel. Oh yeah wasn't it just a little bit funny when Korra held a press conference to announce to the residents of Republic City that she was the new Avatar; I was like did that really just happen
blink.gif
haha.

Tenzin's little boy reminded me a bit of a miniature Aang but a bit more on the wild side. I got a good kick out of the scene where Korra calls Tenzin a terrible teacher and Tenzin's son repeats her line and goes into freak out mode kicking things all over the place. Plus I think that original series Avatar wit and funny one-liners kind of humor was much more apparent in this second episode which is a good sign. So all in all it was a good premiere and I like the direction the show is headed.

A head's up...seems there is a request to have the Avatar conversation moved to the general discourse area...you already started the thread and now someone wants all of it moved here...whatever.
rolleyes.gif
Since Barbo started the topic and he is a fellow Mod like you...you all can handle it I suppose.
I was unable to catch up with episode two tonight but I ain't feeling it like you are Ossan...I miss the old gang too much and I just can't get used to the new chick having all of Ang's powers...too cliched for me. Not sure I will keep at this one but will decide after I watch episode two sometime tomorrow.

My friend absolutely loves this and wont stop going on about the new series.

While I also loved this show the ending really disappointed me and left a somewhat bitter legacy for me. Given Aang consulted Kiyoshi and Roku, I expected him to kill the fire lord. Oh well, it is a kid show and I dont even blame the producers, I primarily blame M Night Shymalan for prematurely ending the show. The show was suppose to go on for four seasons covering each element while also developing Ozai's character and answering the question of the whereabouts of Zuko's mother. However, around the end of the second season, the producers got the movie offer and M night Shymalan came in and told them to end the show, so they could begin production on the film. I feel sorry for the producers/writers because Shymalan almost destroyed a beautiful franchise.

As for the new show, one thing I always wished for was for more airbenders and now we have a whole cute clan of them.Meelo is just adorable. I particularly like Tenzin as well, but it weird thinking this reserved guy sprung from Aang loins. I'm sure I will begin to like Korra as she mellows out a bit more, but usually I dont like hotheaded characters unless they are psycho like Azula.

One thing that interests me though is since Tenzin is also Katara's son how comes none of his children are waterbenders as well? Oh well good start so far and pot bellied Korra was hilarious.

Edit: One more thing, this show will be perfect if they show Aang as Korra's spirit guide.

Now that would be something to behold...then I could settle in, eat my popcorn, and watch with glee.

I feel it would have been very against Aang's nature to actually kill Ozai though and I'm glad he didn't. I have to question the part about Shymalan being the cause of the show ending at 3 seasons. I haven't found anything even hinting at that idea, so I have to disbelieve it unless you can provide some kind of good source about it. Though from everything I have read it is true that he committed a travesty to the series with his movie. Still want to see it now though just because.

QUOTE So the first thing we did was, when I met Mike and Bryan, they hadn't finished season three. And really the first conversation was in my hotel room and I said, "Dudes, I gotta know this. You gotta give me this. This is critical. This has to end. If it doesn't end, I'm not on board. If you don't want to end it, it's all good. But it has to end."And at that time, they didn't even know where the movie was going to end, even who Katara was going to end up with. But we all agreed and shook hands on that it was over, it ends, we're going to finish the tale.

Quoted from Shymalan himself.

As for Aang pacifism. The Air Avatar who also believes in pacifism said that the job of the Avatar is to sacrifice their own spirituality for the betterment of the world. The very existence of the Avatar is in contrast to Air nomads teaching who believe in detachment from the world. So it is just very convenient he learnt energy bending from a random giant lion turtle ergo not having to make any real choice. But it is a kid show so I can understand why they went the safe route.

But just after that exact quote, since I found where it came from, Shyamalan says that their response was "no, we saw it as three seasons for each element that he has to learn". So it was intended to be 3 seasons. Whether or not that had much of an impact on the creation of season 3, who knows. But it doesn't seem to have been cause for a whole season to be excluded.

http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Transcript:Ro...Night_Shyamalan

Well season three was still pretty good, but I preferred season two overall and I still believe the close movie deadline offer added pressure to scale back plans for the original series.

Out of this the only bad thing that happened was a slightly rushed ending and a terrible film. Luckily, for die hard fans the comics filled in some of blanks and people have forgotten the movie adaption ever existed.

I guess the waterbenders would be Kya's children (if she has any), as it seems each of Katara and Aang's children got really different (one waterbender, one non-bender, one airbender). So i guess most of the waterbending talent went to Kya.

After a hangover weekend, there is nothing better than watching saturday cartoons to sober up.

This was a really awesome episode. The choreography with the equalist was absolutely stunning. I cant recall the last time I saw such good fight choreography unless I compare it to The Raid. I had to watch that part 3 times over.

Also it is weird in ATLA lightning was for advanced users and now it is a completely mundane skill used to power up the grid. Show how much things have changed.

The only problem is, I really badly want a filler episode just following the hijinks and exploits of Jinora, Ikki and Meelo. They are my favourite characters. So frickin adorable.

I had the same feelings after watching the third episode. The battle sequences are just so well done and it's not just because I love how they incorporate bending in such an aesthetically pleasing way. I really like how Korra being the Avatar isn't just all powerful and can take out every single enemy she encounters and the same can be said about the brothers. It's more fun when she and the guys have to really work for a victory.

I also really dig this whole revolution and anti-bender story-plot. With the new technology era this storyline needed to step outside of what we knew from the previous series and I really like the direction it's going. Someone who is not the Avatar having the ability to strip away a benders powers could strike a serious blow in favor of the anti-bender faction. I'm still skeptical that there isn't some trick to his ability but we shall see as the story starts to unfold in the next episodes. In the preview it looks like Korra called another press conference lol I don't think that will ever not be amusing to me.

Haha it's probably a little bit early for filler episodes when we are trying to establish the main course of the plot -- save the side dishes for later
tongue.gif
but the girls were funny this episode especially when they were giving Korra the business about possibly liking the stubborn brother. Korra earth-bended on them so quick I had to do a double take -- too funny.
