Synopsis: In the prosperous kingdom of Pars lies the Royal Capital of Ecbatana, a city of splendor and wonder, ruled by the undefeated and fearsome King Andragoras. Arslan is the young and curious prince of Pars who, despite his best efforts, doesn't seem to have what it takes to be a proper king like his father. At the age of 14, Arslan goes to his first battle and loses everything as the blood-soaked mist of war gives way to scorching flames, bringing him to face the demise of his once glorious kingdom. However, it is Arslan's destiny to be a ruler, and despite the trials that face him, he must now embark on a journey to reclaim his fallen kingdom.

QUOTE (Norren @ Mar 30 2015, 05:25 PM)Arslan Senki was one of my earliest animes, I fondly recall watching the OVAs on VHS when I rented it from the local Blockbuster Video one week in 97 or so.  I picked up DVDs for it some years back, always wished the adaptations would have gone farther into the story.

The original OVAs actually changed a few things in the adaptation, but the original books and the old shoujo manga adaptation have remained sadly language locked.  When the new manga adaptation by Hirota popped up on some of the translation sites I was honestly pretty excited, because I expect to actually get to see the story's ending this time around.

distinguishing what do you think of ep'1? i decided to see each OVA along eps

Say, do the character designs scream "FULL METAL ALCHEMIST RE-HASH" to anyone else? It's like the new Fafner series, but I just keep seeing the "Majestic Prince" cast, and then get depressed when Reika never shows up. (Quite possibly the closest character to EVER come to my personal definition of "PERFECT FICTIONAL HOTTIE"....)

Give Arslan a blonde French-braid, and you've got Edward Elric

Shapur is Roy Mustang with a really good suntan

Falangies IS the homunculus "Lust" with a new hairstyle and more modest clothes...

Just sayin'....

Yea, that's pretty much just Hiromu Arakawa's character designs. They're relatively simple and a good amount of them look alike. Hero Tales had a similar issue, though that problem felt mostly avoided in Silver Spoon for some reason, despite very much being Arakawa designs.

But I wouldn't go as far as saying it's on the same terrible, same-facey level as Hisashi Hirai (Majestic Prince character designer). He's on a whole other, much lower, level.

This is pretty understandable given that as the LNs were coming to a close, they hired the FMA artist to reboot the Manga and the original designs were some of Amano's infamous androgynous ink blots.

Personally, I really miss the old OVA character designs- the character designer did a masterpiece of work that feels as if it was completely abandoned. Unlike with Silver Spoon where Hachiken and co. quickly became their own characters, I will have to fight to keep from comparing these to the old OVA designs or their FMA/SS lost twins.

The story is, however, top notch and it seems more faithful to the source LNs than the old OVAs were. (The original OVA actually begins right as the battle of Atropetene begins.) I'm really hoping since they're pulling out all the stops and hiring big name guns that they intend to go full story, beginning to end, across multiple seasons. As I mentioned, the original OVA were some of my first Anime, and after almost 20 years I'd like to actually know how this story ends.

The beginning shows off Arslan being typical Arslan- A very compassionate and gentle child, brimming with curiosity and lacking common sense.

The ED... I am horribly amused by the artists turning him into Arslan-tan.

On the other side of the regular cast, we got to meet Daryun, who is pretty much manliness personified. He makes a good foil to the WORST PAINTER IN THE KINGDOM, who we'll hopefully meet soon.

This one is good so far. Exotic landscapes, handsome men - an aloof, golden looking Queen, bored, and married to her dark looking brute of a husband King. A swashbuckling adventure awaits me with hopefully some romance to boot.

Never watched the original series and despite the character designs reminding me of great characters from animes past...well, I'm gonna enjoy this one.

Norren-san...the handsome one whom you mention as "manly" truly is. I mean a girl could actually dream in those dreamy sculptured arms of his.

It covers the first act.

The first OVA did some heavy timeskip, and my memory of them all runs together a bit because I had both the first OVA and second OVA on the same VHS tape, but as I recall, OVA 1 ends with either the second battle with Kharlan or Arslan's reunion with Qishward. (And Azrael and Sorush.)

... At the rate they're going, I think that might be the entire cour.

Also, that Daryun vs Silvermask battle in the new OP.

Vaphreeze's question about "Which does the prince resemble, the king, or the queen?" has an unwritten "Or your friend, Narsus?" at the end of it.

An interesting point, in the original OVAs, before they ignite the oil on fire, the Lusitanian priests begin chanting ominously and it's left quite ambiguous whether both the fog and oil was real or conjured. The new adaptation seems to be avoiding magic, but the LNs and OVAs very much implied it to be real. I'm curious why they chose to change the story.

Nothing like a blow...a betrayal...a kill to wake one from a dream. The innocent Prince Arslan suffered such indeed. The BGM was grand and set the tone for the downfall of the victors but not before we got a looksee at the betrayer reassuring the King that all was well...so obvious.

Gasp! Is it the end already for the noble Prince? What of his Maiden Battle? And yet...from yonder comes the great knight...the noble, dashing, Daryun to the rescue!

Gee whiz does he cut a dashing figure. I swooned and I know a few others who did too.

Yeah im going to have to watch this, im not looking forward to it because i don't usually watch this genre (only read about it), i like stuff like Dynasty Warriors (TkR) and Fushigi Yuugi but only when its not this dark, im saying dark because my preliminary read of the manga felt a bit dark (haven't read it much yet only skimped). That said i feel like I'm forced/obligated to watch this, i know if she put her mind to it it must be good.
tongue.gif

But you can't blame Arakawa for the rehash, its a common tec, and her characters are well liked and great.

QUOTE (Barbobot @ Apr 10 2015, 6:00 PM)like a good adventure story, though I know nothing of the source story and never saw the original 90's OVA.despite it felt rushed for me I suggest you to try 1st OVA, just retold up to ep.8 now that Arslan's party is assembled... both have their pros/cons yet I prefer in TV Kharlan's death , also a cliffhanger of Andragoras still alive to resume soon
ohmy.gif

The original was rushed, but made a fairly solid effort to handle things more... smoothly?

I feel like the new adaptation is staying too true to Arakawa form and doing shock stuff to maintain the tension at a certain level, but have been enjoying it considerably, anyway. All the new designs have grown on me save for Gieve and Farangeese- those are insufferable in both art and behavior. They've been flanderized heavily.

Well... that played out extremely different and fairly weak. I expected more.

With this episode we're caught up to the end of OVA #2, which transpired more like this:
It has been a while, but I'm pretty sure that the Sindhuran king dies in the middle of the battle with the war elephants, and "The will of the gods" was his dying wish.

The entire everything's different. It was left entirely open to question whether the monster was chosen before or after the choice of Daryoon as Lajendra's champion, and both Lajendra and his brother sat on opposite sides of a massive Colosseum style arena, rather than an indoor building. Arislan sat with Lajendra, but the two were isolated on a balcony, Arislan's group was sitting on a lower level

The monster actually splits Daryoon's shield in half and somewhere around there Arislan draws his sword and holds it to Lajendra's throat for the rest of the battle. This impressed the faltering Jaswant, who had actually scaled the backside of the Colosseum wall to assassinate both Lajendra and Arislan at the brother's orders. He ends up deciding that neither Sindhuran prince is as worthy of his service as Arislan, and simply withdraws.

Daryoon doesn't win by a throat shot, he actually catches a lightning bolt on his broken sword and throws it into the giant, causing him to experience pain for the first time. He picks up the giant's axe and threatens him with it, the Giant surrenders, trembling in fear like a scared child. The priests declare a winner, the giant turns on his master and hoists him by his own petard. (Literally, he just climbs the arena wall, picks the brother up by the ankle, and drops him head first to an implied death.)

QUOTE (Norren @ Aug 2 2015,5:11 PM)caught up to the end of OVA #2now that this season is over with ArslanxÉtoile, did it end OVA 3? if not s2 will...
ED songs are my favorites of the series, FSN UBW ED 2 sounds like One Light
tongue.gif

We actually ended with the end of OVA #4, which the VHS/DVDs of show as a set with OVA #3. You can't watch #3 without seamlessly going into #4.

Still remaining to be seen is OVA 5, covering more of Arslan's advance, set against Gieve's insane quest to discover the sword of king Rukhnabad, first king of Pars.

Not pictured at all is Prince Hermes' little sidequest in #3 and #4 where he ends up meeting his childhood sweetheart up at either a Black Sea or Mediterranean sea port. Some significant stuff happens there. Not sure if that story got dropped or if it was from later in the books and they decided to use it to put Hermes in a different location. (It also may have possibly been a flashback chapter, all things considered.) Come to think of it, I think OVA #3 and #4 skipped his battle with Bodan entirely.

On an interesting note, the Lusitanians are a really screwball take on Gnostics. I was reading up on Gnostics the other day because of some oddball claims I saw somewhere and was surprised to see a familiar name (Yaldaboath) listed as their god. Pre-orthodoxy Christianity was weeeeird.

The Heroic Legend of Arslan: Dust Storm Dance, 2nd Tv series only 8 Eps long?!

QUOTE (Norren @ Jul 03 2016, 07:29 PM)Freaking loved that end card.Me too xD also the new OVA was hilarious, Arslan is already king (of naïves)

Picked up Kemono no Souja Erin instead... better setup than Arslan... must be targeted to girls and general audience it seems .... slow setup, more SoL in a slightly fantasy type world that is based in our own past, which seems to be the best use of these that genre's elements.... ... only different large tamed beasts added into the mix... reminds me of what India has always done with elephants in battle... That said, if there was another cour of Arslan planned wouldn't it have been press released already? That has to be the biggest difference in the form... using anime to sell manga, records, merchandise... more than itself... wierd not to see an immediate next season/cour if it's popular enough... the story just ends...leaves you hanging there... which is more like books, in a series such as Harry Potter, which had a year or two between them. I suppose it'd be like that.... if the manga has enough volumes to do another cour.
