GFX comp suggestion.

Well, here's my little story:

Since I became active on Fansub TV, there were only 4 GFX competitions (and the voting for the fifth is about to end). That is counting since late October. Alternatively, most other forums I have been at have had over 10 (at least!) similar competitions during the same time. What I noticed is that, eventually, people lose interest in Fansub comps because they are so slow. They take some time to make a sig for Fansub, and then move elswhere until the current Tokyo Artist Dome competition ends.

Conclusion: I think slow GFX competitions lower people's interest in Tokyo Art dome and Fansub TV Boards in general.

My suggestion: We should speed the competitions up a bit. I have heard other people say it, and I repeat here: two weeks is more than enough for competition entries (as opposed to a month), as well as 3-5 days for voting (most of the votes are given in the first couple of days and then the poll stands open for another few days while we waste time; then, it takes about another week to announce results and make a new comp).

Please let me know what you think, especially the forum moderators, since you have the opportunity to implement such changes. If anything, getting an extra modetator to take care of this small stuff while DoR is busy would not hurt Fansub.

The occurrence of the competitions are all off DoR's timeline. If I recall, he keeps the competitions so that they are one month long each competition. Before then, we had it for 2 or more weeks long, but it wasn't really organized. You might want to talk to DoR about all this; he plans the competitions and all.

...And that is exactly why I made this thread - so that the people on here get to express their opinion if they want it or make some suggestions I couldn' tcome up with... And, earlier or later, DoR will see this thread as well...

Apparently the current competition was taking longer because DoR said that he's busy with school (like he said in the poll thread).

You can say people are sometimes busy right? Though I kind of agree with Ausdoerrt, the competition preparation time could be shorter (and there should be more participants and voters too, that'll make things more interesting

Yes, she was the co-moderator who tried helping out DoR with the organization of the competitions.

I'm sure on making the competitions occur more frequently though, just enough for one month. I do agree that we'll need a moderator to keep the competition on track, but just so that the competition occurs on time since DoR has school, we'll probably want a moderator to count up the votes, open polls, make new competitions, etc. in DoR's absence.

Well, we can discuss this matter within the FTV team for now to organize something for the Art Dome, and see who's available almost all the time. I think noob and usspaul are active, but not that active, unfortunately

. I'm available, and I think you are too? Eh we'll discuss amongst ourselves.

Well, one way or the other, I do think sth should be done... DoR was busy w/ school since I came here, and I mean - everyone is busy with school, and it's also not fair to put everything on his shoulders, which is obviously a lot of work.

Then again, for those who said we need more participants/voters - well, we should figure out how to make people interested. Maybe some system of recognition for winners could help too. As a good example, PlanetRender Forums get like 30-50 entries every time, and why? The competition occurs regularly, there is a vote for future topics, and winners get a lot of recognition - a winner title, their sig is shown on the front page for a week, and also they get PR points(which can be used for some extra stuff on the forums). We could at least, say, make a 500x200 space on the front page for the winner.

And no, I haven't yet known a person who needs a month to complete a signature. A normal length for a signature competition is 5-7 days from what I see on other forums. A shorter entry period would probabla make the comp more interesting - a challenge of sorts... If someone says we should have a longer time - we could have two different sets of competitions going on at the same time: a 1-2 week comp for simple stuff like sigs and a 4-5 week comp for more complicated things like wallpapers, and untraditional forms of anime art, up to hand drawings or things made in 3D. Also, making a space for GFX battles on the forum would make the Art Dome more interesting.

Thanks to the FTV team for a positive approach to my suggestion.

Just thought I'd drop in and show my support for these suggestions. Also if needed, the FTV team can always draw in a member to work only on the comps. I mean, it shouldn't be that difficult to count votes, open a new thread for the next comp, or w/e else needs to be done when DoR isn't available. And it's also not like the person can mess up too bad...

And we still have currently available moderators to do that, so that doesn't seem to be necessary to pull in more members to become moderators.

But I'll agree with you Aus. The FTV team will look into the matter for now and see what we can arrange. If we can get in touch with DoR during the weekends or something, maybe he can draw out how he wants it to go for the T.A.D. If we make changes without his jurisdiction, then we'd be at loss, since most of it is his idea, so we'd otta look up to him ya?

Indeed, Hama, I do agree with you there. I just though that getting in contact with the whole FTV team publicly would do more good rather then sending around PMs. You guyz have the ways to do this kind of stuff around here; I was suggesting the means. Without doubt, DoR has to participate since he is also the one responsible. It's just that, two minds are better than one, and if we get around five we should have the work done

At the start the comps lasted 2 weeks max. 1 week for the entry and 1 week for the poll. But because of that i got alot of pm's asking can't the comps be longer etc.. So i have extended it from 1 week to 2 and from 2 to a month.

Also Mune used to help me in times when i was to busy with school, but she will not be back any more. So i do need a second Mod to help me out. So i think if you have the time Hamasusuke, you can be that mod.

Also the reason why i am not entering any comps lately is, i don't have that much time because i am in my final year of school and that is my top priority at the moment. I will be more active on the comps during upcoming vacations.

Also i had the idea of having 2 comps at the same time. Normally the winner decide's the new theme for the next comp. And lately it has always been signature or signature + Avatar. I have goten a few pm's when we are having wallpaper comps again. So i was thinking of having 2 at once "Signature" and "Wallpaper". Then members decide if they enter one or the other or both if they want too.

Let me know your thoughts about this.

Sure I'll take the time to help you out in the competitions, no problem.

Hmm... that seems to be a good idea. Now that you mentioned it, it's pretty dull without the wallpaper competitions in place, huh. I'll go with that idea.

2 weeks is just fine, but a month is an overkill. We can't kill the comps for some one person who can't make it in time. We should try to make SOTWs competitive rather than compassionate.

Also, I did mention the two-comp idea above; wallpaper comps, as I said, could be a little longer cause walls take a longer time to complete than sigs. Could have, say, Sig of the Week and Wallpaper of the Month or sth. So I'm all for a double-comp style. Somebody could set up a poll to see what people around here decide.

So, if we speed up SOTWs and create wallpaper comps the Art Dome should become more attractive. Also, I think we should have a voting system for the topic.

So well, it's all just great, and the last two comps have been cancelled, so does that mean the comps section died for an indefinite time? Maybe we should open a new comp or two now that most people are done with exams or whatever else they had in the past month?

(couldn't find a better place to post this, so here)

I'm planning to reopen the same competitions that were canceled. Those two were good picks, but seem like you were right, exam week was a jamming thing. I guess I didn't calculate the time when people would be in a testing period correctly.

If DoR has something in mind, maybe he'll speak up. Till then, just wait a few more days or so.

so whenever are you opening the comps?

I have a suggestion, don't know how well it'll go though. How about we have a poll and ask what should be the next wallpaper or ava/sig comp and how many people would participate in what kind of comps (would have to limit the choices or let some members give suggestions though)? That way you can try to find a theme for the next competition that quite a few people would enter. Plus it would make sense to ask since the last competition, both a and b, were canceled due to inactivity.

If you mean sth like a topic poll, it surely does increase the turnout, but not by a lot. I've been using it on another forum since it started and it works pretty well, but here you've gotta ask the mods whether they want to do it.

I'm going to wait till DoR comes back active enough to suggest what we should do. I was planning on opening up the competition out-of-the-air but I wanted to know what DoR wanted to do. If not, I'm going to wait a week till he says something before I open up a competition.

Well, it's been over a month already, and I believe this not to be good for the forum... I think we could have a poll or sth to decide what to do with the GFX section to maybe draw people's attention.
