2 years since a post. I'm sad now. Anyway I may as well try and post so it doesn't appear so dead. Anyway, we all know that as a general rule print media is considered to be dieing.

Anyway, books are rapidly embracing e-formats. Comic books are slowly getting there, - though the pricing needs a rethink -. So what about Manga? That's hugely print, from the magazines many Manga get serialised in, to the collected volumes.

I don't know if e-formats are being embraced in Japan and such - though typing this has made me curious to look into it -, but what about the licensed scans, would yo read them like you would a book on an e-reader? What would you be willing to pay for digital Manga? Would yo prefer it to be volume only, or would you like individual chapters akin to individual songs from an album?

Oddly enough it seems everything is going to these fancy e-reader books like the Nook and other bookish related devices/apps now. Although it's best to keep things in print incase the worst happens to your device. I mean there are chances of loosing everything you've bought if you aren't too careful though.

Presonally I still prefer the paperbacks if it's a series that I really enjoy. Unless I'm actually reading the scanalated portion becuase I'm impatient at times, or if it's an overly long series, or if it's one of those series that will never see the light of day outside of Japan. tongue.gif

I've never understood the argument that it's best to keep things in print incase something happens to your device. Surely the reverse is more correct that it's better to buy digitally incase something happens to your print?

Reason being, I buy books digitally from Amazon, Warhammer books from the Black Library - publisher - site, Comic Books from the Marvel App and the Comixology app. Now for each of these, I have to have an account to buy from them and when they do buy they get linked to my account. So that I can download what ever I've brought as many times and to as many devices as I wish.

Now let's assume Tokyopop and Viz did release Manga digitally, presumably the same would apply. You would most likely have to create an account and you brought One Piece, Rozen Maiden and Futari Ecchi aswell, they would then be linked to my my account once I've purchased them. So if my Tablet did implode right before my eyes, all I'd have to do is log onto my Viz and TP accounts on my new tablet and I can read them like before. Yet if you lost all your printed volumes it would be harder to just go out and buy an entire run of One Piece/Rozen Maiden/Futari Ecchi, especially if one of those series is now longer being printed.

Don't get me wrong I love printed Manga, especially complete runs stacked on the shelf. But I've just had to get rid of my collection - they went to a good home - because of its size. So if Viz and others did do e-published Manga for the space alone I'd consider it. Take the big 3 in WSJ both are well past 50 volumes so even if they were the only Manga you brought and read having completed runs will be at of space especially if you read and buy other series. Because of the format of Manga 2 or 3 series take up more space than the same number of book series'.

In many ways reading Manga digitally would be business as normal for me because I've been reading Scanlated Manga for ages now, I'm used to reading it on my tablet, so if it were ever released Digitally I'd have to seriously consider buying digitally over print.

With Viz using their WSJ app, they are attempting to at least walk down the digital path, - though it's not available in the UK sadly -

And will probably have to nudge Yuu Sasuga in there soon enough, only a couple of chapters in and gotta say he's godlike lol<br><br>Lately i am extremely interested in a genre that is still not very well self defined but i think it might be the next "thing", the genre would be a setting were the characters are outside of highschool and working, like Servant Service, Denki-gai, or Bonnouji (or Asistant to mangakasan).<br><br>I think its a great genre that will come alive thanks to the decreasing birthrate in Japan and the increasing amount of old otakus. (paving way to "customers" more interested in dramas outside of highschool, i keep remembering too what a friend used to say "why the hell do all settings have to be in school :(" i dont really agree but i see his point now)<br><br>Aside from that (anime interests) I am a male gamer, i used to play a lot of Dota (w3 map) and LoL but stopped because it was getting quite ugly (like an addiction), i love shooters, morpgs, and any kind of single player game (any genre such as action fighting strategy or rpg, even simulation games, i used to like management games but that was when the only management games i knew were Sim City, Sim Hospital, Sim Theme Park, and Transport Tycoon, nowadays i dont like management games because they keep reminding me of how good the old retro ones were compared to the new ones, such as crusader kings etc). I also love the battle simulation games like Chivalry or JKA II, and i highly recommend trying Chivalry on Steam.<br><br>My favorite game series are Disgaea, Tales of, Xcom (although they botched the reboot), Warcraft, (Tactics/Battle) Ogre, FF (altough they keep botching it after lightning's games), SMT/persona, D&D inspired games like Baldur's Gate, as well as Shadowrun and similar series with boardgame-like rulesets or atmosphere, Shinobido, Samurai Warriors/Dynasty Warriors, and GEB, and any Monhun-like games.<br><br>My favorite morpgs are Mu online, Ragnarok online (first one), Tera online, SMTI online (died in NA T_T), Aion, Silkroad online (f*****g botfest), and right now im looking forward to Merchants of Kaidan (looks yummy), which definitely isnt a mmorpg but would be cool if it had a multiplayer element like Shogun 2 has.

So has anyone seen this yet? its the new cover for yenpress's To Aru light novel.

user posted image

I cant believe they only copied the orbs around the title name for consistency and they didnt write index inside neither in english nor katakana xD it feels fail and nonsensical

Im put off by the font a bit too, but more than that i find the I from Index stretching below the title to be... well it reminds me of the small shitstorm when the same thing happened with Persona 1's port xD (cover art)

Dont watch this downfall parody if you hate hitler vids

I'm so getting annoyed, how the amount of absurd open endings in mangas, has been increasing lately... and in that sentence I am more pointing towards the long running series compared to the shorts/one-shots now a days.

A one-shot is a one-shot, 1 chapter, simple as that.
Short running series... anything from 2 to 10 chapters.
Long running series... 10+ to... any huge number (If you ask me that is).

Now back to my frustration, Series that have been running for 11-*Anything* chapters and have an open ending.
Before the year 2012 published ones... I actually found a majority of the long running series have a nice and satisfying ending. Most of the ones beyond that? Feels like a bucket of cold water being thrown in my face lately.

I honestly feel like its all a bait and switch in the recent years... Here's a nice new manga that has everything you will enjoy *Star eyes* and here is the ending after 15 chapters : Incomplete, open end, nothing has been solved and please look forward to another one of my works... (which will never ever happen).

Anyone else has had this lately? Oh, and I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong section... rules were not really clear to me/outdated (No offense).

Personally, I'm pretty miffed at how much stuff degenerates into shameless fanservice in a desperate plea to get the ratings they need to keep producing.

I find very little that I really can say I enjoy in every way, but it seems like the number of things that would be awesome if X, Y, and Z would put some clothes on and tone down the tsuntsun is so excessively high that it irks me to no end. Many things that I find look interesting but end up being a single tankoban work.

I have found a few standouts that I'm enjoying immensely, like Mahoutsukai no yome, Futari no renai shoka, Tsuyokute New Saga, and Dungeon Meshi.

Other than that it's my usual blend of Josei, Shoujo, and Shonen manga. (Lamenting how the longer and more interesting period dramas always seem to take forever to get scanlated/updated/etc.)

I still wish Kagami no kuni no harisugawa had survived. That manga was interesting right up until the rushed ending killed it.

All I can think of upon reading your post is Liar Game, I've been reading that thing for years, and i loved every chapter right up until the last say 10 chapters, when the 'ending' if you can call it that came out of now where and pretty much wrapped it up in a little bow while leaving it open. Fine i felt like the manga was approaching the end, but the end just seemed so far out of left field, im rather disaapointed overall.

So yeah, i feel your pain.

Perhaps most of it is business, but how much of it is cultural? I remember, from a few animes like '5 Centimeters Per Second' how commentary on it was about how 'Japanese' it was to leave endings like this, as it was a long standing literary tradition in Japan. You can find this in European works to a lesser extent, but here in the USofA, it is almost verbotten... again, as a cultural thing... which is also a business thing, but again as an aspect of the culture or zeitgeist.

Wow, on so many levels.
Having stuff Scanlated/updated does indeed take longer... Main reason I learned how to read Japanese and try to go to japan as much as I can xD.
Liar game?! Good lord, how long was that series running? 8-9 years? Still, to hear that it also ended with an open ending... Just makes me feel angry and frustrated, as all the others have done with such an ending.
I actually didn't think about it, but you are so very right gdpetti, how most of it is probably due to business and/or culture, that's very true!! thanks!

I for one am surprised to hear Liar game ended and that I honestly did not think about the whole business world in such a spectrum.

To all of you, my deepest gratitude for your replies.

Yeah it ended months ago but was running for years, since I myself was reading it for about 8 years. The ending was weird it was sort of all wrapped up -strangely quickly - but at the same time it was open. I was reading the MAL forums not long after I finished the last chapter and there was a thread about it and it split people almost right down the middle. It was just funky.

Though thanks gdpetti, I hadn't thought about it like that, that it could quite possibly be a cultural thing. what a wonderful food for thought smile.gif Man I miss this site.
