Have you caught swine flu? There's word all over the US of shortages of the vaccine, but all things considered, aside from having a different vaccine than the traditional flu virus, it doesn't seem all that different from normal flu in my opinion. I blame the media circus for the panic and anxiety. If you have had swine flu, please describe how bad your symptoms were, and if you felt it was any worse than the normal flu.

I'm going to move this to the Thoughtful Section, since it's a worldwide epidemic and should be addressed formally.

I haven't caught the flu, but I know a few people in my school who has. At CSULB, it was such a sudden burst that during the summer they quarantined it for a couple of days.

Bah! The Swine Flu is senselessly stupid media sensationalism (repetitive? meh).

The Swine Flue is less dangerous by a good amount than the actual flu, and the symptoms are weaker. The only thing about it that is especially different is that it's a bit more contagious, so it spreads faster to more people. The media has put the whole thing WAY out of perspective and caused the general public to freak out. It's just stupid ~_~

I have had several friends who've had it, and have been forced not to attend lecture because of it (at university) and have been told to try to quarantine themselves as best they can. That said, they didn't really follow instructions (one just blatantly went to class without a mask and didn't care, the rest skipped class but didn't bother 'quarantining themselves'). All of them were perfectly ok, just had a runny nose, some headaches, etc - general flu symptoms but less strong.

The only people to whom the Swine Flu really poses any kind of a threat to are the very young (e.g. infants below the age of 1) and the very elderly who's immune systems are not fully functioning and for whom minor symptoms can cause problems. Even then, so long as you aren't living in a third world country, you'll pull through just fine. You're more likely to die from the standard flu, so yeah...

Thanks for moving it hamasusuke. I wasn't sure at first which section to put this in, since it could have become either meaningful discussion or simply a list of yes/no's with some symptoms thrown in.

I haven't caught it either, nor has anyone in my family. I don't believe I know anyone personally that has caught it, but my next-door neighbor is a school teacher, and knows people who've had it. I can't go more than a couple days though without seeing or hearing something about H1N1 vaccines in the news.

Agree with DChaos. The whole Swing Flu epidemic has been completely blown out of proportion by the media. The regular Flu kills far people than Swine Flu so I have no clue what all the coverage is for. Except stirring up the public to scare them for absolutely no reason like the media sometimes likes to do.

Don't know anyone personally who has it or has had it, but I do know of one big party up in New Hampshire I think at a college where 200 people all caught H1N1 from playing beirut.

Yes, I think the media had blown it out of proportions, but not because it was such a new thing compared to a typical swine flu, but because there was no reasonable cause for the strain to mutate for human infection, let alone an adequate vaccine. That's what's blowing it around the world spontaneously. The main problem with that fact is the hysteria that comes with it.

The trouble is that the media don't watch informative TV series like Moyashimon, which explained how pigs are a vector for new flu viruses, they can catch bird flu and then pass it on to humans in a mutated form.

Moyashimon also explained the thing about cotton face masks being pretty ineffective since viruses are so much smaller than bacteria so they can pass through the weave.

I think the initial panic about this particular swine flu was people didn't know how strong it was at first so authorities were cautious since they ddn't want a repeat of the 1918 global flu epidemic which killed 1 in 10 people infected (an estimated 3–6% of the world's population died in just two years). In the event this flu has turned out to be pretty mild so the precautions weren't really necessary. The only odd thing about it was that it was pretty active in the summer whereas flu is usually active in the winter.

So tell us, Hiroyuki. How would the swine flu moyashimon critters look like?

Anyways, doctors adviced me to get both regular flu and swine flu shot because of past surgeries I'd have a higher risk of falling ill blablabla, I took the regular flu shot just for the heck of it. I didn't necessarily think I'd need the swine flu shot. Sure I'd be in a higher risk group but not as bad as asthma patients or people with other chronic diseases. The flu shot sounded fishy anyways and I heard it hurt like hell because of thicker(?) needles. I thought, IF I'm going to get mexican flu, then so be it. It'd be stupid to get sick because of something that should prevent you from it. Over here I heard 2 or 3 kids died because of the vaccin.
None in my family has caught it, neither has any of my friends. I guess we got lucky but I also know a lot of people were more cautious and took the adviced precautions seriously.

They'd look vaguely pig-like, but with wings. Flying pigs ftw.

I had it, just sweated in bed a lot but felt cold. Worse than the flu but not anything to die over. Got swabbed, 1 week later when i was better I got the results that I had it.

I did get the swine flu jab in the end. I was in one of the risk groups so was allowed the jab but the main reason I actually took it was because I was travelling to a third world country (Sudan). Last time I went there I got a flu type illness AND food poisoning. I couldn't afford anything like that again as I was busy after the Christmas period and the last thing I needed was to miss a week or so of university just because of some flu infection.

Like the SARS outbreak, people having overreacted yet again to another outbreak. I just wished WHO would not always state the worst case scenario for every large scale pandemic, it does not help. In the end I feel it was a waste of public resources spending all this money on vaccines when the money could have been directed to bigger killers (the normal flu for one) and other major killers such as heart disease. Just compare the number of deaths to heart disease and the number of deaths to Swine flu. The money spent is totally disproportionate. Unfortunately due to the publicity this disease received the decision to make the vaccines was largely a political decision rather than a health one i.e. the governments had to be seen taking action.

Especially since at the time, a lot of people were under the impression that this was a one-time vaccine that would protect them for life. Now we're finding out it's just like the regular flu shot and you'll need to receive it each year. Makes you wonder if the hype will begin again this winter.
