i know i know old but still great series
the story is dense filled with mistery which isn't revealed easy and leaves a lot for ur imagination
long story short : When a young girl, Rekka, wakes up from a dream, she finds a ring of light over her head and she is welcomed by a group of girls who had wings on them.Rekka then becomes a member of the Haibane Alliance, the group who protects the town of Guri, enclosed by walls. Why did Rekka become a Haibane? Who were the Haibane? As Rekka continues her life in the peaceful town of Guri, the mystery behind her new friends begin to be revealed.

about the music...no words left for me to describe it

so anyone liked this series? know smg about it?

Hearing Haibane Renmei described as an old series makes me feel old! It was one of the "fresh new" series I watched avidly each week when I got into fansubs, and (like Suzumiya Haruhi perhaps) it was quickly clear it would go down as one of the classic anime series.

Who was Rakka? Well going by her looks (and the series author) I think she was originally Lain from Serial Experiments Lain.

What happened to Rakka when she left that world? My theory is that having learned to be an angel she was reincarnated as Tenko in Kamisama Kazoku.

Yes, I've got the OST, it's brilliant, works very well as an album. I would rate it on par with .hack//SIGN OST.

The TV series was a little slow at first, ep1 was great then it sort of marked time as Rakka explored the world, but then it really hit you mid-series as it went suddenly dark and foreboding and Rakka began to wonder just what kind of world she had been born into—was it heaven after all, or was it hell....

It is definatly a GREAT series.

It is on my VERY select and short list of great anime. I mean, there are lots of good series out there. But the great ones are rare.

The way they explorer the issue of life and purpose, plus the search for yourself is simply great. It is a deep anime that is fun to watch but it offers a lot more if you are willing to see all that is there.

The series is pretty quiet... good... but not something I can consider great like the soundtracks... but I liked it anyway...

Like Bold said, it's about the meaning of life. The Wall is a metaphor for death — what lies beyond? Only those who cross the wall know for sure, but they never come back or send word. Maybe there is nothing beyond, maybe an afterlife, and maybe the ordinary world into which people are reborn to start life over again. The monastic order of the Haibane Renmei claim to know what is going on, but do they really know or are they just spinning myths? In that respect they are exactly like the religions of our own world.

QUOTE (MKK2004 @ Jul 13 2006, 08:29 PM) A myth is that the Haibane are a group of children who died from suicide, and send to the town of Guri to learn about life. And leave when the time comes.
suicide could work in order to solve some misteries but u know the little ones ? it's hard for me to believe that they could do such a thing at their age

I'm sure Rakka and Reki were suicides but overall I felt it was more a matter of premature deaths in general.

The black wings are suicides. Not the others. It is fitting with classical religion saying that people who commited suicide need to be forgiven their sin before accessing the after life.

This is what the train was about. Realize your error and be forgivem.

Its a shame thet this show is going to be lost in a sea of shows full violence and panty shots. Haibane Renmei is one of the most cerebral introspective shows I've ever seen. Its ridiculously dense with meaning, alot of which im not sure of.
And i like the suicide theory, but that wouldnt explain the little wings.

I thought the three minute promo (ep00) was a masterpiece, did anyone else get to see that at the time? I think only the French group I's released it.

It starts with the sound of a cooking timer ticking as the pan-like halo mould revolves, and then the timer goes "ting!" and the mould opens to reveal a shining halo... then a slightly shaky home movie of the Haibane and Old Home ... more scenes ... finally ending with Rakka finding a dead halo and then crossing the wall herself (something that never happened in the actual series.)

Rakka crossing the wall

It occurs to me that since trailers/promos are exactly that, places like fansub tv should be able to continue to serve them after a series is licenced. I wonder if that would be a good idea or not...

Hey has this series been licensed?? I'm watching it on youtube but its depressing at how bad the quality is. I'm just wondering to see if i can dl it or not.

I downloaded this series a while back but haven't gotten around to it yet. I have it in my old time anime rotation eventhough I'm pretty sure it's only about 2-3 yrs old. No youtube watching for me I can't stand to watch an anime with terrible picture quality. I was checking ANN and it got some high ratings. So I look forward to good results.

Emm, I `ve never heard of this anime before but you people intrigued me by calling it a classic and a must.
So I checked it a bit and I liked the art a lot, so I think I`m going to d/load one or two eps and see for myself if it fits to my liking...

I'm so behind on a lot of animes, so I just quit downloading in seasons, and will watch it in marathons XD
I mean... hello, it's Bold and Hiroyuki, and even MKK and senpai kun replying, and now ploumid is going to check it as well! I can't just stay behind

Finding it is another thing though... *hint-hint*

There is a very healthy source in isohunt.com , Noshi!
I`m currently getting it with 30Kb/s...

I`m a real sucker searching for old classic animes even though this isn`t particularly old. I think it`s `03 vintage...

Close. It's actually from '02.

I had thought about watching this anime before when I saw it on some other streaming site, but for whatever reason I decided not to watch it. Maybe I'll finally check this out and see if it fits my taste for anime.

Hehehe ploumid I just pm'ed Noshi the healthy source you just mentioned in widescreen edition no less. We are on it today *high fives ploumid*
