So I'm in the market for a new media player, (my old mp3 player died on me recently)
now I would like something to play my "other" files on the go.... so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a Portable Media player (handheld) that has *.MKV support??

or any alternative so I can port my mkv flles to a portable device (please do not suggest getting a notebook...

Unfortunately there are no handheld mp3 players that can play files of the mkv extension as far as I know. A quick search on google seems to confirm this. The only things I found were set top boxes you could hook up to your tv. (there weren't even any of those a year ago)

Unfortunately a computer is the only thing that can process subtitles and display them correctly since there are so many ways to do it. If you still want a media player look at archos, creative or even apple. Collectively they put out a rather large range of players with varying features (no mkv support on any of them) and prices.

Archos is the top end as they have the most features in their players with large touch screens and also large prices. Creative and Apple are pretty close but creative seems to be a little bit better as they support more formats / codecs. Either way you get a good quality media player.

You can always convert your files so that they will work on your media player. Something like Handbrake or MediaCoder will work as they support reading mkv files.

i was afraid this was the case... My google skillz have not deserted me (yet), but you always hope someone will know about something that might have gone under the radar

I think I'll go with something called the V-touch... so far it seems the chinesse version of the I-touch (clever chinamen and the way they bypass a brand name) as far as i can tell is not too shabby and supports AVI... so i'll have to get on converting my beloved

files on to AVI

at any rate thanks for the help...
if anyone remembers any player that hints this support let me know (I don't care about brands as long as the product is good)

Since the V-Touch is made by a chinese developer you won't get the same sort of customer service from them. Firmware upgrading is strongly cautioned against and their webpage has only one page of documentation.

It does look like it would be a nice cheap alternative to the ipod touch but personally I wouldn't buy it. Hopefully it works well for you and I'd like to hear how it works as I was looking at it as well before I figured out it was a knock off.

That actually isn't a bad idea. Though the amount of storage space you can have on a pda is quite dismal compared to what you get with even a horrible mp3 player now. Also it would cost a bit more as you would have to get the PDA which is certainly more expensive and the software. Then again you could buy a couple 8 or 16GB sticks and put your stuff on them.

No idea how well it would work with anything HD though as the processors on PDAs are nowhere near as fast as even a netbook. So you may still have to convert the video to something smaller anyways which would ruin the idea.
