I need help guys...

It's and Acer Aspire 5517 I bought on impulse since it was only $398, I regret buying this crap so much...

Anyway about 2 days ago I was doing a mapquest. Closed the laptop and went my marry way. When I came back home. The mouse pad doesn't work. Not the mouse pad, not the left or right button. I googled a lot. I used the Fn key + all the F's keys and no luck. Went to the Acer website and downloaded the new drivers for the mouse pad. Installed them and still no luck.

So i'm here having no idea what else to try. I was told maybe re-installing the drivers would work, but I have no idea how to do that with Windows 7.

I tried calling the Acer help line just to be told to send it for repair, but get this. I need to pay for my own label. Which is completely retarded if the laptop is under warranty. I don't have money to waste to pay for a label, box and bubble wrap. Not to mention they are probably unreliable as hell.

So help me out guys. I already tried googling like mad, but no luck. So i'm hoping someone in here can help me\.

If NOTHING from the mouse pad works (e.g. no reaction from the pad or either button) it sounds like hardware failure to me...which means you need to send it in for repairs if under warranty.
Surprised they'd force you to pay for shipping for repair under warranty though, usually they send you a box to use...I'd say check the website to see if there's a way to get a ticket where they send you a box.

That would be my guess and advice - especially since opening the thing up yourself would likely void your warranty which you apparently have. I can't imagine that drivers would be the problem if it worked one moment and stopped the next plus you tried installing fresh drivers.

I know on my compaq laptop that there is a button the turns the mouse pad off, not sure if yours has that or not but if it does that may be the problem. If it doesn't then most likely it's as dchaosblade says.

When i was fixing an acer computer once it was a pain in the @ss because it had a specail program that control alot of things i was like why my jump drive not reading... stupid program had it off so it doesnt read... so that same program may be having it off.

What's the name of the program and how do I see whether is on or no?

I refuse to give up. I will not send this computer for repair, unless it's completely hopeless...

Tell me about it.

I had called them before becuase the network card wasn't working. They told me to send it for repairs, but I had to pay for Box, shipping and handling and to make sure it was send on UPS, nothing else. I'm like "No screw you". Even if it's under warranty I need to pay for everything.

So after some researh I found I just had to download new drivers. I did and fix it. Those retards on costumer supports couldn't tell me that. Useless pricks.

go to start, search device manager, go under Mice and Other Pointing Devices, find your "mousepad's name," right click and update drivers. Note that for different computers, it may be under different labels. If you can't find it there, check the lists to make sure there is nothing out of the ordinary (i.e. nothing that has a yellow caution like sign attached to it)

Thanks I'll try that. I tried doing a search for "mouse" but I saw nothing to update nor reinstall any drivers.

Man hopefully this works. I so refuse to send this for repair. My pride is on the line!

Here's a link to Acers driver site. Just go through the menus to select your touchpad's driver software. I would assume it should be the synaptics driver, but if you have a chance to check what your device manager says, you can pick the right one from here: Acer Site.
