It has finally happened:

QUOTE On Sunday, a man named Sal9000 married the love of his life. Her name is Nene Anegasaki, and she lives inside of a Nintendo DS video game called Love Plus. The wedding took place during a Make: Japan meet-up held at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. In attendance were a live audience, an MC, the bride's virtual video game girlfriend — who made a speech — and a real human priest (Read More).

There's been no specification, but it doesn't sound like it was a legal marriage (if it could be a legal marriage anyway). So, it's really just ceremonial if no marriage license documents were signed. But the question remains ... will this set a new precedent? Will otaku everywhere give up on a real girl/boyfriend and just form symbolic marriages with their favourite fictional characters?

Would you?

O_O oh lol. my first reaction was to laugh then to actually understand how this could be possible XD
No, i wouldnt do something like this (reminds me of that one episode in ouran when renge had the massive crush/love on a video game character who looked uncannily like Kyoua) but yes i believe people can and will be sad, desperate and needy enough to do something like this.

it would be sad if people gave up human interaction for a video game but maybe its just another logical step up for a serious otaku?

I remember reading this at Sankaku Complex, its funny....stupid but then again if I was him and stuck in Japan....I'll probably end up marrying a 2D imagination then the shallow 3D Girls of Japan.

Lolz.....I don't know if I am serious or not anymore.

While 2D is awesome, The holy grail is to find a 3D girl who dresses, looks and acts like you favorite 2D. Now that is wife material!

from a married man perspective, that IS the holly grail... but is likelly you get it in drop count, (like my wife used to go to all anime screenings and conventions with me, but she only cosplayed once and that is a +18 story i can't tell lest it'll never happen again....)

Anyhow if you are looking for a person to spend the rest of your life with, the first thing to look is that you share the same interests, that will remain even after age ravages you both. If she has the looks as well... that's just icing just never marry a tsundere... is fun at first, but get'sold pretty quickly

in regards to the OP... mix that news with this news and you got yourself a very interesting bussiness prospect

This makes me think of the TV series Jikou Keisatsu (statute of limitations police) where a woman police officer (Mikazaki) gets hold of a marriage certificate which the guy she fancies (Kiriyama) has filled in for a dare, and fills in her own name as the bride and then signs it with their respective seals. She berates herself about it though, since they're not even going out, but anyhow she carries it with her everywhere she goes. (How she got hold of his seal is not clear, it looks like she may have had a forgery made).

I'll try it. Maybe i'm just crazy enough but I might. But, how would you exactly go about it? Like I said, I might consider it, but if it worked, what do you get out of it? It would be nice to say, "yeah I married Kaolla Suu" but if you can't actually talk to her (or anything else) what is the point. It would be nice to bring the characters to life though... Like meggie in Inkheart. (which isn't a manga, but was kinda cool anyway) I would totally bring to life all the girls from the Hinata Sou. But I'd still prolly choose Suu-chan.

Hate to break it to you but it WAS 100% legal. Dude flew to Guam and got married to her there. It was signed by a government official there in Guam and Japan has to recognize it according to their constitution.

What in the world are you serious???? that just plan weird it like marrying a pie or a bottle with picture of girl on it

I'm VERY serious here. He flew to Guam where their marrige law are a little.... lose shall we say. He went to a small church where the preacher married him and his videogame love and the license was signed by a Guam government offical and was legalized. and according to the Japanese Constitution they MUST recognize the marrige as legal. Like they have to recognize a marrige of two people in the USA if they should move to Japan.

I'm pretty sure the marriage, if really real, would be broken in less time than needed to say Rumpelstiltskin. If only because Japan outlawed forced marriages, and the bride couldn't give an informed consent (for obvious reasons).

Countries do recognize marriages contracted in other countries, but there is boundaries. Another example : polygamy is not recognized here. You may marry three women in a country were it's allowed, but if you come in France, only the first marriage will be recognized.
I bet some countries also don't recognized Canadian or Belgian same-sex marriages.

I just saw the video of Sal9000 marrying his ds character. Another example of moral debasement. It is his perogative, so he can, so he will, so he does.

This is what liberalism gets us.

oh god now i seen it all its like how is relationship wise with a computer character

Is this kind of thing really that unusual though? I started dating Akari Kamigishi nearly five years ago now, and she's made of acetate and ink. It's a near perfect relationship, I've never once had an argument with her and she's never cheated on me.
