I watched GANTZ anime and it was quite good... Lately, I have seen the live action and was thoroughly impressed. It is rare for Hollywood to actually follow the story in a book..

lately, the only similarity is the name. Remakes are usually the same. Gantz live action followed the anime almost exactly, It is seriously worth watching.

Oh yes! Flatmate got the 1 month trial of netflix now that it is available in the UK. Looking through selection it pretty much sucks tbh but then we see Gantz II: Perfect Answer and we knew immediately that it must be watched. Even my friends that absolutely despise anime in all forms love Gantz.

The film starts off pretty slow in comparison to the first one. But then it becomes action packed when the Black clad men make their move. Honestly, the subway scene was great and had some good choreographed samurai action.

I do have some gripes. The American dub cast was absolutely terrible. They sounded like they were stuck in the 80s. IMO, they miscast Kei Kurono. He comes across as likeable. Some people may like that but I always loved him for the prick he was in the manga. Probably, the most real and grounded protagonist I have come across in a manga. I also dont get why they replaced Izumi with that girl. The guy who played Mr Nishi was great, couldnt think of a better casting.

All in all, for two hours and a half it weaved in some of Gantz best moments in the manga. I know Gantz is ending this year, but if it end like how the film ended I will be pissed.

I'm a huge fan of the manga! When I started to read it I could not believe how addictive it was and I had a hard time stopping

I also had no idea the manga was ending... I better catch up with it.
As for the Live Action, I'll probably hunt down the subs rather than watching it dubbed. I know that in your case you saw it on Netflix where they have almost everything dubbed... I'm looking at the actors and I think they chose a suitable guy to play Kei at least appearance wise.

Wow, I had no idea you read Gantz. When did you start?

Yes, it is very addictive. I remember I did not go to uni for two weeks simply because I wanted to stay at home and read the manga. I pretty much became a slave to the black ball. Gantz: Phase one is almost a flawless seinen sci-fi manga.

As much as Ohba+Obata tried to make Death Note a 'serious humour' manga it pales in comparison to the amount of outrageous laughs I have had with Gantz and the cynical author Oku.

As for the film. When we watched the first one my friend turned to me and said Kei was more likeable than his manga counterpart. For me that is a big no no. The great thing about Kei is, like any hormone fuelled teenage boy, he was an asshole. Only throughout the manga does he evolve to be a decent human being.

A refreshing protagonist compared to the usual wimpy or OTT boys in manga.

Hmm I think I started to read it about a year and a half ago, I can't remember when exactly.. I stopped reading at chapter 260, so I still have a ways to go until I'm up to speed. I would spend tons of hours sitting at my computer reading rarely taking any breaks, and it's odd for me to be this addicted to a manga.

I did like Kei's character quite a bit, despite the asshole that he was. I rather like how he changes after he starts dating Tae though.

And if I remember correctly Gantz itself had quite a sense of humor...? lol

What did you mean by OTT boys?

OTT = over the top. I mean like high school delinquents who are the baddest badass in the mother effin existential badass universe whose fists of fire can punch a hole in the fabric of reality.

While such protagonists are fun, Kei is a much more believable character. He could be anyone of my friends hence where the 'serious humour' comes from.

Thanks for linking Yaya I was debating whether or not to spend a Saturday afternoon or Sunday giving this a viewing but since they're right here I might as well go ahead and download them. But franzoir since you say the manga is ending this year I guess I might as well start reading it now. I liked the anime and I'm assuming that the manga is much better (well julez said it was good as well). It funny because just reading the reviews of both films they're very mixed. You have some saying that the first was better and some saying the second was better. To me that is a good sign because at least neither film seems to have been completed hated; I feel a little bit better committing the time to download and watch it.
