Since I saw that we now have a Type Moon thread, I thought I might as well do the thing a rabid Key fan like myself should do and create a thread all about the Key games. Don't know if this will really be useful, but it's here if you need it.

Some general information on Key:
Key is a visual novel studio under the publisher Visual Art's that is known for producing dramatic and plot-oriented visual novels. Some of the main staff members include Jun Maeda who had worked as the main scenario writer, and worked on the music for most of Key's releases, but now is going to be strictly focusing on the music; Itaru Hinoue, the main art director who supplied character art for Kanon, Air, Clannad, and Little Busters! (Hinoue was co-art director for Little Busters! with Na-Ga, another of Key's artists); the majority of the music produced for the games has been by Magome Togoshi (left Key in late 2006), and Shinji Orito.

Key's official website.

Before starting Key, the founding members worked at the company Tactics under the published Nexton. There, they produced three games: Dousei, Moon., and One: Kagayaku Kisetsu e. A translation patch for One was released a few days ago.

Key has produced six games to date: Kanon, Air, Clannad, Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume, Tomoyo After: It's a Wonderful Life, and Little Busters!, in that order. A seventh, Rewrite, is currently in production. In the past there were translation projects for both Kanon and Air, but both were discontinued only to be restarted and are still ongoing. Planetarian was the first Key game to get a translation patch released for it. Clannad is done being translated and is in the process of editing.

Any general news on Key games, translation projects, or company updates can be posted here along with discussion on the games themselves, but discussion about the anime adaptations for One, Kanon, Air, and Clannad can go in their respective threads in the Anime forum.

Finished translation patches:
One: Kagayaku Kisetsu e
Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume

Ongoing translation projects:
Kanon - Translation finished; editing at 50% completion as of 3/21/08
Air; overall completion at 38.4%
Clannad - Translation finished; editing has begun
Tomoyo After: It's a Wonderful Life - Translation ongoing
Little Busters! - Translation ongoing

Yay! Juhachi-dono The Key Master supreme.

So I think I'll start off with a few questions to get the thread rolling. For starters How does Key do it? They bring us hit visual novel after hit visual novel all of which have very little or no pornographic content. How can they do this? I mean they do have their standard "Key things" that they put in just about every game like the heroine having a cute catchphrase, cute animals typically appear and play a large role. How do they keep that so fresh?

Ah and I was already wondering when Juhachi will finally open a Key thread
laugh.gif
. About the patch of Kanon, yeah it seems that the guys from haeleth are not going to finish it but theres another group which took over haeleths work for now and they say that they are currently editing this game. Here's the site of it http://radicalr.pestermom.com/vn.html . So I think there's still a little bit hope left for the patch
rolleyes.gif
.
Hmmm too bad that theres nearly no hope for a full translated Air patch....well but at least you can still download a patch which has some parts of the game translated from the site which cancelled the project, here's the link http://www.cjas.org/~zalas/AIR/moin.cgi/AIR .

Anyone hear of an english patch for the Clannad game? I found a rather nice torrent with Kanon, Air, Clannad and a couple other games all in one. With the Clannad movie and tv series coming out I expect that someone is working on an english patch for the game.

I know that the Clannad game is in the process of being translated by Baka-Tsuki. They currently have Kyou's, Tomoyo's, Fuuko's, and Kotomi's route complete and are about 75% done. Judging from their History timeline, if they keep up the pace they are currently at they will finish the translation phase in maybe 3-4 months, but it's hard to tell especially with school now. And then there is still revision, editing, and a beta to go through after that.

, who knows maybe the guys at baka tsuki do it one day as far as I can recall they said something like they would only translate Non H-games and Little Busters is as far as I know a non h-game so who knows ^^ ( hehe lol I just thought that there are probably some people who are pretty disappointed that Little Busters is not a h-game

I am already an Apprentice Key Master to Juhachi-dono. You would usurp my position?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm looks like Clannad is coming to the Xbox 360 in spring of 08. ZOMG! Alas that we will never see an official English localization because I would so love to have it. Although it is tempting to import despite how poorly I would stumble through it.

Still I'm excited the 360 is getting a Key visual novel. This just shows how much effort they are putting into making the 360's presence felt in Japan.

Geh, Smokie!! Bad!! Bad Bad!!
lol, seriously though; double posting? I expected better of you...

To topic:
Still wish I had an X-Box 360; then I'd definitely get Clannad (love the show, should probably try the game on PC at some point). Which brings up the question *hoping it hasn't been answered o.o* Is Clannad translated (whether officially or by fans)?

Edit: got my answer *actually read a little in the thread* Hehe, now just gotta wait for the translation to finish!!
ohmy.gif

Ok I've found something about the Tomoyo After translation, I don't know if the rumor was about this one since it's for the ps2 and not for the pc version, but oh well who cares here you go http://forums.visualnews.net/showthread.php?t=16671

I think the mods don't consider it as "bad" double posting if there are at least 1 or 2 days between the old and the new post.

but what the heck I may try to persevere to be master myself

lol

Anyways Xbox 360 is getting clannad
blink.gif
too bad Im aiming for ps3 since Most of my fav games are there but still I find it amusing that it will go to a next-gen console, one thing that I might despise when it gets to 360 is that most people that play 360 overlooks this kind of games even w/o knowing it and bash it annoyingly which kinda annoys me greatly

Well I don't think Clannad on the 360 will be overlooked or bashed at all since it's only being released in japan. There it's just another game for people to get for the system and there are probably many people waiting for it. Considering 70% of PC games in japan are visual novels I can't imagine a visual novel as good as Clannad on the 360 being overlooked just because of what it is.

Now if it were to be released stateside then yes, it would be greatly overlooked and bashed and no one would buy it cause there is pretty much no market for visual novels in the US. Which is exactly why it will never be released in the US.

Actually, sorry if this is off topic a bit but there was that one game that was visual novel in the US that people liked. I forgot what it was called though. Visual novel is slightly...very slightly moving towards the US market but don't expect any games like Clannad and other anime based...Detective visual novels seems like it's doing rather okay in the US. If more people are willing to play to visual novels, some games might even make it to the US market.

Do you mean the Phoenix Wright games? I think they are a bit visual novel like. The States have got a few DS games that can fall in the visual novel category.

Yeah. I think that was it. I also think the Persona series even though it was an RPG is quite visual novel type as well. Games like these tend to have multiple endings. I remember in Persona you have to do some things to unlock the best ending or do nothing at all to get a good ending or depending on who you treat well is who you will end up with as well o..o. You could say the element of visual novel exist in most rpg games based on animated characters such as Persona and etc that I can't think of but most really don't pay attention to it...
