This thread is intended as a fully open discussion for ideas and suggestions on the future of the site! Please comment!

Firstly, I'd like to put some things out that relate to the software the site runs on, it is out of date once again and we are past due for an update.

However the update has some problems:

  • It only officially supports one name and one url (example: www.fansub.tv) and currently we use two (www.fansub.tv and maikuando.tv).
The name 'Fansub' obviously relates to anime fansubs, and associates us with piracy, sadly.
'Maiku Ando's Anime' i guess is still OK but I feel using that would feel wrong, like I was just folding Fansub into my site and it would disrespect the history.
An entirely new name, that we can make into something totally different.
  • Most of the old site (Fansub and Maikuando.tv) just wont work with the new software, the old code written back then by Daft and me is just too old now. This means the DDLs would go.

And is has some good points too:

  • More Secure - It is still being updated and patched etc.
  • SSO / Single Sign-On for the Wordpress Blogs - The new software apparently finally supports wordpress integration (how long have we had this issue!)

Therefore, Id like to ask for any ideas and suggestions (this is truly open) but also I'd like to ask:

  1. Should we change our name? Ideas? Suggestions?
  2.  Any ideas to revive the site / get more activity?

Any ideas to revive the site / get more activity?

might be just a coincidence from what I have noticed, activity (people posting) went down with MATV·FTV merged... since fall 2016 but especially this year so i wonder what's the problem, wouldn't others prefer this updated·forum?

Any ideas to revive the site / get more activity?

might be just a coincidence from what I have noticed, activity (people posting) went down with MATV·FTV merged... since fall 2016 but especially this year so i wonder what's the problem, wouldn't others prefer this updated·forum?

I have noticed that this month has been particually bad, with active users in the low single digits.

With regard the site merger, and the upgrades, I put all of that to the community before I did any of it, and not a single person raised an objection.

The site merger was a way to save money on the software and allowed me to re-use the code, other than the odd mention of 'Ando & Daft's Anime' as the official name, really it still looks and feels like two different places/sites, it took a lot of work to get that to work and I really didn't have to put in all that effort as I had Daft's OK to just merge the sites from the start.

Not a single person complained at my taking ownership, which from how Daft told me was basically either I take it on or it will be shutdown, so I took on the challenge in an attempt to save it.

I also know there are members of the community who dislike me personally, but thats fine, everyone is free to friend (or not) whoever they want, and I certainly wouldn't want them to leave, I can keep my distance from them in the community if thats their wish. I run this site because I wanted it to continue and I had the ability and the chance to keep it going instead of it being shutdown.

I suspect many have no idea what it takes to operate this site, and honestly I had never added it all up before, so here are the current annual running costs:

Domains: $100

Cloudflare: $240

Main site Hosting: $240

Main site backups: $60

WP Blog Hosting: $120

WP Blog Backups: $30

Karaoke Monster: $60

Dev Server:$60

Software License: $140

Total: $1,050

Out of that Daft pays $150 plus an unknown extra amount for FTV's email service.

I pay the remaining $900.

We have zero adverts or any ad revenue and there hasn't been a single donation in years.

And then there is the literal years of time spent writing code, fixing stuff, upgrading etc by both Daft and me.

If we are at the point of this being a dead community, then there is little point keeping it going at those costs.

If on the other hand we have a small but active community, them I'm happy to keep throwing the time and money at it.

For the interim, I intend to move Karaoke Monster onto the Blogs server, that will save $60 per year.

The Dev server I have already started to shutdown and move it to a local virtual machine at home, that would save another $60 per year.

If I upgrade the software, the company wants double the fee for using a second domain name, making it $280 a year, I object to that on principle but nothing I can do unless I switch software, and that would take months of time to work out how to do it or even what to move to.

Noone seems to use the built in Blogs, only my demo is still there, that would save $20 / year off the license (or $40 if they double it).

So there is a potential to save $140 per year which would cover the double license cost.

I don't demand or expect anything from anyone or the commuity, but for my $900 I WOULD like some opinions / comments :)

thought i was the hated one ;/ i may look pessimistic, but by its lack of activity i guess you could do another 'ultimatum'... like on·MATV years ago just in case nobody else still cares enough, If not is about time to truly call it quits 2019?:(

Mhh, I'm kinda split on this.

I've been pretty inactive since I've been running around like crazy trying to get a few things off the ground, and haven't had much chance to poke my head in here.  I've been meaning to revive my Blog as a development blog, but I've realized the more I talk about stuff the less stuff gets done, leading to a visible decline in forward progress...  The struggle is real. ^^;

Costs and blogging points first. These are dedicated hosting costs, yes?  I'm mostly used to shared virtual hosting, so the prices are a bit of a sticker shock to me.  The cost on the Wordpress server seems excessive- especially for how few of us use it.  I'd honestly forgot the mini-blog stuff was there, also.  From what I'm seeing at a glance, the Mini-blogs look as functional as the full WP blogs, and from what you've just said, they cost less.  How hard is it to migrate existing blogs?  Is hand-reposting the only option?

As to activity declining in general...  I think that was really a natural outcome of a number of things lining up.  The server issues prior to the merger hit this place hard, not long after the minecraft server burned some of us out.  (I know I put more time into that than I should have...)

I don't think the name matters all that much, especially since everyone in this hobby knows that simulcasting has changed the face of it all.  Is there some reason we can't just park one domain on the other or both on a new one and let people pick which site template they want via a dropdown?  They're basically the same page with different CSS, from what I'm seeing at a glance.

I would suggest a Discord, but I have mixed feeling about community Discords.  They tend to move conversation away from the website itself.  I feel like they drift back towards the days of more static websites w/ IRC channels.  This could encourage a shift towards more formal reviews/writeups on the site and more spoiler heavy chatter in the discord.  I dunno, it's a thought.

It really looks like the main thing needed is to consolidate the site.  Right now we kind of have four things stitched together, as far as I can tell:

  • Featured Stuff (forum posts and a few featured posts.  Also blogs, but ignoring that for the moment.)
  • Oddly presented Episode Guides (Screenshot galleries?)
  • Crunchyroll Index (offsite links)
  • Forum Posts

Straying Away from the front page gets us

  • Redundant links to the same Gallery section (which claims to have AMVs I'm not seeing... somewhere?)
  • Blogs in two flavors
  • IRC chat link
  • Karaoke Monster Forum Post link
  • FTV Webzine blog (defunct)
  • some offsite links

This seems to me like it could be condensed considerably to punch up a smaller number of sections.  Merge the old FTV Webzine blog with the news and featured posts section.  Drop the number of links to the Gallery, rework the forum template if at all possible and reduce the subforum count, go for a more responsive layout that breaks things up.  (When I finish with my current client site build, I'd be happy to piece together a mockup to help with this.)

I'm going to be tied down with this for at least a few more weeks, tho'.

Thats actually a scientific thing, apparently its something to do with the act of talking and thinking about it actually causes your mind to feel it has made progress and effectivly takes the pressure off before actually doing anything. I try to always discuss things like development or projects when already well into them for that very reason.

The hosting costs are virtual machines, the KM one is only $5 a month, but over a year even that adds up. Back in the hay days of FTV and MATV, we had actual dedicated servers just for downloads with 1TB drives in them pushing 30TBit of bw, now we just have little VMs.
You can get cheaper hosting, but believe me when I say it is never worth it. We have had real trouble in the past with cheap hosts, the hassle, lost time, lost data etc just isnt worth saving a couple $ a month.
The company we use is very good and even when problems occur, they are quick to sort things out. The tools they provide to us are very good too, and it means I can duplicate the entire VM and clone it or move it anywhere. We also have daily backups, all things that really help in case of a disaster.
The main web server is actually MATV's original server and the WP Blog server is actually Fansub's original server. The old Fansub server actually has a lot of the original broken FTV stuff on it and the blogs, so I simply left the Blogs there when Daft said he was happy to keep it going.
Its been upgraded and various work done on it, but its now a little under used hench the idea of moving KM to it.

The Wordpress Blogs are nicer, and frankly I think I prefer those (and they are somewhat of a standard) compared to the mini-blogs, the problem with anything Invision Power based is they will randomly change things and make it not backwards compatible, their next version (4.0+) is a prime example of this, its a right mess frankly.
There is a hosting cost to wordpress by our choice to separate host it, but its free in terms of license. The mini blogs have a license cost, so I'd much rather ditch those and stick with Wordpres, especially as thats where the most of the data is.
And also, there is no import tool to or from the Mini blogs.

As to activity declining in general...  I think that was really a natural outcome of a number of things lining up.  The server issues prior to the merger hit this place hard, not long after the minecraft server burned some of us out.  (I know I put more time into that than I should have...)

That server issue was a real blow to me and Daft, we lost everything that day, and we thought we had it all backuped up. Literally years worth of data was lost. I think thats a good part of what ended it for Daft, all the new systems he had spent years working on just gone.
I lost a lot of data too in that mess, and was about ready to quit too. I still don't fully know waht kept me going. That is also the last server we bought from that hosting company, it was the 4th time we'd had a server blow up from them and we'd had enough. This what I meant about cheaper hosts not being worth it.

The sites are basically the same with some little bits on a conditional based on the url hostname, the colors / graphics are entirely CSS themes, and you can swap the themes indipendantly of the site code, ie MATV url with Fansub theme (if you check the bottom of the page you will see a 'change theme' button to do this your self).
I can easily point one domain at the other so if you access one it redirects you to the other, but the address in the browser will change, and that ruins the feel for many. I could do that for free however.

Changing the software would take too much time, time which I don't have. Even trying to fix the code problems is a mounttain right now and I just can't do it, and I'm not even that good a coder.

It really looks like the main thing needed is to consolidate the site.  Right now we kind of have four things stitched together, as far as I can tell:

OK, so to explain what you are really seeing there. The Frontpage is basically MATV's original frontpage made to look like Fansub's. Its totally MATV's code, meaning it was designed long ago to just display screenshots for the DDLs, and when you clicked on one it took you to the series page, thats where you see all the screenshots per episode - that used to show how many files were available, and you clicked an episode and it took you to the episode page which was full of all the torrent info and DDL links.

Roll on a few years and we hit copyright crisis, so I basically copy all of that and call it 'streaming' insted of 'series' and then I pull in RSS feeds from crunchy roll and re-format the data to fit and make almost the same thing, so in the end you get to CR's viewing page insted of a DDL. Thats why it looks the same, because its 95% the same code just copy and pasted and then hacked around like crazy and a ton of new bits tacked on the backend to make it work with totally new data. It took another 6 motnhs just to get a link between streaming and series becuase they were not compatable.

Both of these, the 'series' and 'stream' type pages are running separately, and neither of them are connected to or part of the Gallery its all custom code. The Gallery is a module from Invision power and part of the forum suite.
The DDL section (/series/) is obviously a problem copyright wise, so it got renamed from Fansub DDLs to be user content like AMVs or trailers, to basically give it a purpose still. The idea was we could torrent other related things and put them up for DDL insted of Fansubs, that kinda didn't really happen however.

The main Gallery has got videos in there, take a look here https://www.fansub.t...ery&category=11  The point of renaming it to 'and AMV' was to give a hint that you can upload them here, not my fault not many people have done it. :)

There is however a problem with the Gallery, it has a 100MB upload limit right now, which is imposed by Cloudflare. They refuse to allow it to go any higher without paying thousands of $$$$ per month for an enterprise plan.
I have spent 2+ years trying to find a way around it, and they only say pay up or switch off protection. Well if i'm going to turn off protection, I may as well not pay for it as it wont do anything. The other option would be some weird mess of proxying to split off upload requests to bypass cloudflare and all sorts of complex re-routing of stuff which will take me ages to do and probably not work very well, and I know full well that Invision Power will change something next version and break it again.

I'm going to be tied down with this for at least a few more weeks, tho'.

Some help with the code or even the CSS themes would be a huge help, at present I'm trying to do all of it on my own and I simply don't have the time any more.

Well, I think then the logical question that comes out of that is which do you think is a stronger presence: FTV, or MATV? I'm inclined to answer that FTV, but that is a questionable observation at this point.

agreed also FTV has been longer (like 15 years) than MATV (10), but in the end it's up to Maiku for which name... still i find kind of pointless to only fix issues here if we don't keep this forum active too, at least until more people post?-_-

Yeah. It doesn't help I'm very much a "think out loud" person and often end up solving things via Rubber Duck Debugging. ^^;;

Okay, that makes the puzzle fit together a little better. I was visualizing some scenario where you and Daft had the slightly higher tier servers for some kind of more intense coding support. Hosting for me is weird- My business has a reseller account with HostGator, it results in me being able to run a large number of sites on the cheapest tier of VM with reasonable support. (Although admittedly I haven't done much in the way of automated backup work since I keep local copies of all my data.)

Okay, that makes it all fit together better.

I'm going to disagree with that in part- I've got a few clients with wordpress sites and I find the post editor in Wordpress to be awful, but in all other respects WP is definitely a better platform. On an interesting note, have you considered going the other way with it all? Wordpress has a solid forum plugin called bbPress from what I understand. (Importing from IPB 4.x seems to be right out, but apparently you can import from IPB 3.x?)

I'll try sandboxing bbPress in one of my personal sites later tonight.

That server issue was a real blow to me and Daft, we lost everything that day, and we thought we had it all backuped up. Literally years worth of data was lost. I think thats a good part of what ended it for Daft, all the new systems he had spent years working on just gone.

Well, I think then the logical question that comes out of that is which do you think is a stronger presence: FTV, or MATV? I'm inclined to answer that FTV, but that is a questionable observation at this point.

Changing the software would take too much time, time which I don't have. Even trying to fix the code problems is a mounttain right now and I just can't do it, and I'm not even that good a coder.

What exactly is in the site that makes this a time/code challenge? If it's an HTML/CSS thing, I can help with that. I've avoided PHP as I've always been mortally fearful of punching an epic security hole in something by breathing with the wrong part of code open, but I can at least read some PHP.

Interesting. So, it sounds like a reorganization has to do a certain amount of codework... Hmm. Have you got Discord? I'd be down to yak about this some in a faster medium.

re:AMVs - At the risk of asking a terrible question, why not bypass the issue and run AMVs off Youtube, Bitchute or something and embed in a forum section? (I wonder if LBRY.io has an embed feature yet...)

Some help with the code or even the CSS themes would be a huge help, at present I'm trying to do all of it on my own and I simply don't have the time any more.

That's about all I feel confident in doing, so... I'll yell when I'm clear of this client site! :D

So, I'm not 100% clear of this client site, but pretty close.  Anyone have the original images used for the postage stamps in the site logo up there?

Also, what did you think of the WP/bbPress option?

The mini blogs, i was wondering if we can use them for game reviews or game “guides?” Maybe thatll add more traffic? Or we dont have to use the mini blogs, just add them somewhere in the forums.

We could even add more contents like reviews of movies, games, music, movies, or dramas. But we will need reviewers (writers) though.

That's about all I feel confident in doing, so... I'll yell when I'm clear of this client site! :D

I'm going to have to reply below the whole lot as the quoting has got to complex for it to handle lol I'll try to paragraph it to be 1 per quote.

I too tend to be an out load thinker, much to the annoyance of those around me.

Hostgator is probably fine for home type website or really basic things, but there not something I'd ever use. I used to offer web hosting as a means to cover server costs, but stopped when noone was interested anymore, which in turn was due to the explosion of super cheap/free hosting that was really aweful, but thats what people wanted, cheap over any kind of reliability. I want the oposite, reliabilty and quality over price. As a job I work on enterprise grade hardware setups, and the hassle it saves is worth it to me.

I won't go too much into the code on the public forums, but basically it needs a lot of re-writing becuase its not compatable with how the forum needs it to be to run inside it. This was actually a requirment for this version too, but I got around that by keeping most of the backend systems out of the forum, and therefore it didn't matter. Its kinda funny, but most of the code you don't actually get to see or intereact with, its all doing stuff behind the scenes so that when you want a specific page its all there ready. Basically its all about getting and managing data on anime, it used to read in tons of torrent data, including trackers and all the feeds from animesuki. Then I added in crunchyroll as a feed which is separate. Daft wrote the pulse system which we unfortunatly lost. But in the backend, we have a huge database of every anime fansub release over years and years, plus series info from MAL and then loads of screen shots, plus all the anime files, plus all the crunchyroll data. All of that needs a re-write, and its also at a point of 'do we still need to keep that?' as we don't do torrents anymore, we can't do ddls, animesuki has long gone etc The code is mainly php, with a little bit of python and a bit of bash.

bbpress looks interesting but it dosn't seem to be as full of a forum as we have currently. And it dosnt have a gallery either.

edit: missed some of the reply.

Embedding videos is ok, but the problem with that is that when the source takes it down the content is lost, and Youtube is rather good at taking things down for no aparent reason these days.

If you could help with the CSS /html / grid or even js side of things that would be a huge help, as if you basically say 'I need <this> output <here>' I can make the php do that, and you can make the 'this' :)

I have to head out now, apologies to everyone else who has replied that I havn't answered, I will come back and reply to you all later.

So, I'm not 100% clear of this client site, but pretty close. Anyone have the original images used for the postage stamps in the site logo up there?

The logo we're discussing here pre-dates me joing FTV, I think it was made by wwww6 or something like that, who I've not seen in years. When Daft did the remodel from the old pink design, he cut the logo down to just the 'Fansub.TV' part of the text and it was no longer animated. When I took over and merged it with matv I took the opportunity to use the old logo again as I think it is a really beautiful banner. It was a big part of the feel of ftv to me so I really wanted to bring it back.

Sadly I have nothing other than the gif as used on the site. There is a thread somewhere, I think it was a competition to make the banner, and this was the winner.

Maybe someone can edit it?

It would be great to see such content added to the site, there is an articles feature where-by a person can write pages directly on the site (without needing to use the mini-blogs), I need to find out how that works and how to give access to it. I'd rather use articles if they can integrate with the other parts of the site - maybe have them show up on the front page with an image or something kinda like how the screen shots are doing at the moment. Sadly the mini-blogs don't do that, although I might be able to code something to do that.

But in terms of 'can we use them for X purpose', then yes, to any of the site features. I'm really happy for you or anyone to be creative in any way that you want to, and don't feel restricted on what can or can't be done. If access or level on the site prevents it, then let me know and I'll fix that.

I think game reviews / guides are a great idea, and on the same note, music or food is also great, generally anything that you feel might interest people here or bring in people is fine with me.

I was actually thinking of trying to add in some sort of chaos card battle type thing, nothing fancy but basically if you have card X and someone else has card Y then you can have them battle based on the card stats. It would be super basic and not quite sure how it would work yet. I need someone who knows how those things work to help me with it tho.

Edit: merged the posts, and that broke the quotes too. arrrg. oh well nm.

It could be any game, ryu-san. I’m recruiting someone who can write reviews. Lol. He’s currently playing yakuza kiwami 2.

I’m also thinking about a friend of mine (a music teacher, loves japanese music, a gamer, an otaku) who could write reviews as well.
