is anyone up for opening a scanlating group as an affiliation with FTV? i know it sounds really far out and probably really difficult but what do you guys think about it?

i really need some moderators input on this as well >.<

I'd be willing to lend a hand. Unfortunately, I'm only just starting to learn Japanese (like, really learn - I'm taking a course atm); but I can at least do editing and such which doesn't require an understanding of Japanese.
Is Daft behind this? It wouldn't really be right to affiliate any group with FTV without his approval >_>

Assuming Daft supports it, I think it would be an excellent idea; and would fit perfectly with that manga viewing Beta that Daft did a while ago - if it ever gets fully implemented.

thats true - thats why i need you guys to have your input. because i dont know what daft thinks so it was just something i was thinking as a possibility =/ i think it might be a good idea to merge it with the manga viewing beta, but i thought it'd be better if i opened a thread for this so that it got a little more attention. if anyone thinks it should be merged into the manga viewing beta thread please feel free ^^

As long as the people who are involved know what they're getting themselves into, I'll pretty much support any FTV-related initiative.

I used to be a translator for Dynasty manga, I did some "ALIVE" and "Pastel"...but don't we need like a lot of people to do this? I can name a few postions;

- Raw provider
- Translators
- Proofreader
- Quality Checker
- Editor

I say we will need at least 10 people...but that's just from my experiences....

raw provider, translator, cleaner (someone who cleans it up and adds the translated text into boxes) are the ones needed the most. proofreader/editors are the same person(s) and quality checker... not needed.

it depends on what kind of releases you want. high quality or just something with english text in where the japanese one is. for high quality scans you'd need a fair few people (including QCers, editors, translators, cleaners, good raw providers) most groups i know of so far gives the job of cleaning, editing (making engrish into english), and typesetting to the editor. its possible but it can be hard to do for the editor.

if you guys are all for fast releases without HQ then all u need is raw provider, translator and editor. just 3 people would do. but adding a cleaner would take a big load off the editor. right now i dont even know if we're going to really to anything with this idea =/ i can do cleaning, editing and typesetting but with no raws we have nothing to do.

For the qualifying fields, a good amount of people can do everything. The only problem we'd have is finding someone decent in translating text from Japanese to English (with correct grammar and dialog) and a person who can provide the raw file. Having a handful of cleaners is a good idea as well, as there are many pages in just one chapter. Other than that, it's a simple work in most of the other fields.

we could start advertising for raw providers and translators since they are the jobs that are most in demand right now. as for editing etc we could put out adds for them once we know our work load i suppose.

slightly off topic - why isnt there anyone apart from mods and sempais contributing here?

are we really that scary?

Of course we are, what, did you think the Kouhai thought we were their friends? We are the boss-men, not to be talked to except to say "yes sir/ma'am" and do as we tell them to. *cough*

>_>
Anyway, I hope that the project gets off the ground, and as I said before, I offer my services for anything that doesn't require a strong understanding of Japanese...and RAW providing...

It seems like most scanlation groups I see are in need of Japanese->English translators so I don't know how easy it would be to find someone fluent enough in the language who would be willing to translate. Also, although it requires more work, you'd probably be best to go for a higher-end quality if you want people to take the scanlations seriously.

But that's about all I can say since I can neither translate nor do graphics.

as i said before i'm willing to do editing, cleaning (if needed), and typesetting (maybe not for intial projects) but since MKKand dchaosblade are willing to provide raws we just need to find a japanese > english translator?

I'd be willing to do editing and possibly some cleaning, but it seems we already have others for that job and i can't read japanese at all so i'm no help in the one spot we actually need it.

Im willing to help out (even though I'm a kohai). It seems though you've got enough people, not including the jap->eng translator. But if there is some kind of problem, I'm up for any job (except translations).

Geh...I wonder why you assume that because you're not a Sempai/Mod, you are less than us when it comes to this? *doesn't get the logic*

Either way, it seems that we have the following members applying for the following jobs:
Editor: DChaosBlade, samethebear, Barbobot
Cleaner: DChaosBlade, samthebear, Barbobot, hamasuke
Q.C.: hamasuke
RAW provider: MKK
Translators:
  • Chinese-English: MKK
  • Japanese-English:
We also have deadlylazers applying for misc jobs that don't require an understanding in foreign language.

I guess I'll take part in doing this too.

I'll do these areas, since my profession is around them:
Cleaner
Quality Checket
Proof Reader

Well without a jap->eng translator we are kinda stuck, but one series I would love to do is Seikon no Qwaser. Only 3 chapters have actually been released and all in intervals of 4+ months. It's by Hiroyuki Yoshino who worked on the screenplay for animes like Gundam Seed/Destiny, the Mai Hime/Otome series, as well as Code Geass.
