heyy guys, well who ever out there is good at windows movie maker, or decent even could you please help out in this little pickle i have put myself into? I'm not very 'technologically advanced'....

Well basically I wanted to make an amv for manabi straight, i've made some before for naruto and FMP, but i used files i d/l from limewire instead, but today i used the torrent files that i d/l from this site for manabi straight... well the audio works fine, but then when i put in the visual with the music i chose to go with it, then the preview pic doesnt show, but the audio does, and the program keeps jamming up

*note, the file works fine when im just previewing it on windows movie maker, but when i actually collaborate it with the music onto the timeline then it doesnt play the visual, only the audio...

also when i tried to import one other episode it said something along the lines of: the required codec was not downloaded automatically because the download codec automatic check box was not selected in the options dialogue box

so i thought the file was too big so i compressed it....and still the same thing happened, then i thought maybe its just not previewing and if i save it as a movie file and play it on WMP it would work, but then it wouldn't save and it said to check your file locations or something like that...so im like wtf?
huh.gif

if anybody could help me understand what's goin on it'd be a great help!

QUOTE the required codec was not downloaded automatically because the download codec automatic check box was not selected in the options dialogue box

first you have to go into tools>>Options>>General. it should already be on the general tab but just if yours isn't on just go to that tab. then you check the 'Download codecs automaticaly' and click on accept or OK.

This doesn't have anything to do with how big the file is, it's usually because you don't have a codec to run the episode on the program (the program now being WMM) i used to have a ton of problems with this too until i found out that i had to download a codec (it took me forever just to find the right info

")
If it still doesn't work i have to ask you; do you have a codec installed on your computer? you can get codecs from DivX or a CCCP (combined community codec pack - i'm pretty sure that is the exact meaning for the acronyms) alot of people prefer using a CCCP over DivX, but i use a DivX and it's been working fine for me and i've made alot of AMVs like that with WMM. if you worked fine with your other AMVs without a codec installed it may just be that Windows happened to surport that particular file type, AVI files are generally surported but i find that anime works very differently... =/

As with WMM jamming - it can't be helped, it happens to me too. i think the older and more used a computer is the slower and more likey WMM will jam up often... =/ so all i can suggest is that you save frequently and set a background save to every 5 mins or even less if you find that your WMM jamms up alot, and frequently too. after while you can reconise when it might jam up so you can quickly save before it does. i've do that alot too, i've learnt to read signs when i think the program might just shut down on me.

The visual not showing in the preview might also just be part of the codec problem, try what i suggested above and if it still doesn't work send me the specific error messages you get. i'll try my best to help you but i'm just like you and i've only learnt how to deal with this (very extreamly fickle) program through trial and error plus tons of exprience (and fustration) any other questions just send it thru to me too ^^

Good Luck with it ^^

kay well i tried what you said in the beginning, but the same thing keeps happening, and i also do have the codecs, i remember d/ling the community pack, but i do think it is a codec problem. because when i was re-opening the file on WMM, then a small box appears where there's a bar that shows the amount that has been opened so far, and on the top, it quickly shows what its opening, it goes really fast so its hard to read it, but i remember looking at it and it said something along the lines of "searching for codec" and then it said "not found" or something like that. But i don't know what codec i need or where to get it from. Also I tried deleting the movie clip from the timeline and just have the audio, and now its jamming up more than ever. So i closed the program a couple of times and i just closed it recently and tried to re-open it, but it wont work! I mean the shortcut is there and you can fully see it on the start menu, when i put my mouse over it you do see the pointer, but it just doesnt open, no matter how many times i try, i even used the old school method of start---> run---> program files...grrr...WMM is annoying me! If this doesnt work out, do you know of any other movie editing programs that I could easily get that would be easy to use, but better quality?

thanks a bunch!

*PS, sorry for my ghetto technology language, sorry, im not very good at this stuff as you can see, lol

Though I never use Windows Movie Maker, it sounds like you're missing a vfw decoder for whatever the video happens to be. (vfw is different from directshow and is used for applications like WMM)

Download the CCCP Insurgent from my signature. Open it and go to Tools --> Media Information. Then pick that video that is giving you trouble. Once it's done click on OK.

Then go to File --> Save log. Copy and paste that entire log in your next post and I'll see if I can possibly help you...

did you update it? the codec pack i mean i use DviX so it automatically downloads the new versions and patches to fix up bugs etc if you want to use CCCP try what Harukalover suggests, i think that'll work
wink.gif

kay so sorry it took me so long to post, i was loaded with homework until there was no end, so now it's march break and i have time to look over this stuff. i did what you said, and it still didnt work on WMM, i dunno if it was supposed to, but ya
so i did what you told me to do, and this is what i got after copying and pasting it:

End CCCP Insurgent Log - Version 2007-01-01
[/hide]

thanks a bunch for helping me out here!

Go to Start --> Combined Community Codec Pack --> ffdshow VFW Codec Configuration

Then go to the Decoder tab and then click on Codecs in the left panel. Click on XviD's decoder column and change that to libavcodec.

Test in WMM again...

om-gawd..i LOVE you...mu ha ha ha! it works! yaaaaa! does that mean it'll work for all the other manabi straight episodes i put in here, or do i have to do the same thing that you told me to do before with every single different epi i put in here? but it keeps freezing up...i CLICK on the timeline to shorten the clip and it jams up, freezes and the program doesn't respond....omgsh thank you though for fixing my major prob! =)

If it's still freezing you might wanna try removing DivX. Since it's possible that DivX is conflicting with it.

Go into Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs.

Then look for anything with DivX in it. (Probably DivX player force installs it)

If there's nothing like that in Add/Remove Programs. Go into CCCP Insurgent again. Click on Tools --> Advanced.

Then highlight DivX Decoder Filter and click on Unregister. Then do the same to DivX Demux.

You'll still be able to play DivX videos since CCCP's ffdshow can handle them itself. Just won't be able to encode DivX anymore. So leave it alone if you need it for encoding.

EDIT: If that doesn't fix it you might want to try installing a copy of XviD and then going back into the vfw configuration and switching libavcodec to XviD instead.

kay i tried that, but when i did it wouldn't lemme change it...it just stayed at the libavcodec thing w/e you call it ( i did this by right-clicking and pressing on the drop-down menu, "change to all that support XviD codec" or something along those lines...

Which version of XviD did you install? Link to the one you got.

Also just left click on XviD's Decoder column and try seeing if XviD is selectable in that menu.

Well i asked my friend and she said that its to download the K-Lite Codec pack and that the XviD codec was inside of it http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm . Also I did try to just left click it as well, but the drop down menu there only has two options, the libavcodec/disabled...

kay well i installed the XviD codec, and changed all the columns into XviD that were able to be changed, but it still doesn't work T_T. I was looking at some of the previous posts and you had told me to delete DivX...well I only assumed I needed to delete DivX player, but I didn't delete: DivX codec, DivX content uploader, DivX converter or DivX Web Player. I wasn't sure if I should delete that or not because I wasn't sure if deleting that would cause problems for me in the future when I want to watch episodes on WMP?

I've had the same problems with Movie Maker freezing up. And the reason I came for it was..."It's Microsoft." And just left it at that.

If you delete you DivX codec, you won't have any problems playing them on Windows Media Player. But since you have CCCP there is a chance that you have ZoomPlayer also. You should watch your .avi, .mkv, .ogm or other types on the ZoomPlayer.

well i know i've had WMM freeze up before randomly, but now it's just ridiculous, i just touch something or try to delete something and it FREEZES, like hardcore freeze, not the one where if you leave it for 5 mins it will come back, i have to do the whole Ctrl+Alt+Del thing. LOL

kay so then im trusting your word and i guess i'll delete my DivX codec and all that is associated with that name?

You can likely leave DivX web player and DivX content uploader. But at the very least remove that DivX Codec listing in Add/Remove Programs.

If this fails to fix WMM. Then blame it on Microsoft's bad software.

kay, can i say that WMM is the CRAPPIEST program in the whole ENTIRE universe that is just so UTTERLY CRAPPY....grrrr....im steaming mad right now, it KEEPS FREEZING....stupid thing...stupid thing....stupid thing....and even after ALL the stuff I changed too...grr....

Well I'm out of ideas. I figured it was DivX since I've seen it cause some funky decoding problems before even when it wasn't the actual filter doing the decoding for that particular video.

You can either blame WMM or the encoder of that video. The video might be a little messed up since I would already question the abilities of someone who decided to use Virtualdubmod and especially that build which is around 3-4 years old.

hmm sometimes codec block mixing audio and video in movie maker. I would go for decompressing video files into something more egible for movie maker and try again. Try lowering the quality.

If you were able to extract the video file to movie maker extract it to wmv and open that file in movie maker again. This stupid program should recognize its own files
