It depend on what you trying to buy if it via ebay or some other anime store site. For example jbox.com that have adds in anime magazine and on some website. There if you shipping from japan it usually will be EMS shipping which very quick on some occation...just dont miss your package. Although in some case some store make it ship to their store and their site sell it from their store such as akadotretail.com chiisai hana mention to me a while back. So it really depend what you trying to buy.

btw OFFTOPIC....MY Badthwidth exceeded is BACK!! lol... just wait 3 days more for it to change back lol.

I've ordered off ebay from a couple of people in Japan, and so far have not had any problems. I've only done EMS shipping once and it arrived within the week but I had to pay twice as much as the SAL shipping. I did a SAL order from that same person in the summer and it arrive in just over a week (even though it said 4-6 weeks). A SAL order from a different person came in 2 weeks. If you're worried about your package getting lost or damaged, get the insured shipping (which comes with package-tracking as well). And like Kana said, with EMS if you're not home when it's delivered they send it to the Purolator so you have to be able to pick it up yourself.

Also be aware that shipping can be expensive. Not to mention, there could be hidden fees. When I ordered from Akadot I got hit with a $34 fee at delivery, which according to my parents was some sort of broker fee or something to do with ordering Japanese made books through an American store for delivery to Canada.

But to date, everything I've ordered outside Canada has arrived. Just be careful if you're ordering personally from someone. I ordered from a personal store last summer and the last I heard from her was the payment invoice. After my paypal cleared, she never answered any emails

Luckily it was less than $5!

You can always try and find a Japanese import store in your area, too.

btw chiisai_hana where is this Purolator? Actually what is it lol never heard of it haha...

I ordered a mobile strap from a japanese online store and it arrived within a week. The only thing that puzzles me is, that they dont accept payment in advance. Only checks and paypal. I have neither one....

But basically there was no cmmunication problem and the delivered swiftly. I was satisfied.

it works the same as ordering from your locality in most cases, though I know that a few online stores in Japan won't do international shipping, and a very small group of racists won;t do business with foreigners, specifically americans.

by in large though, as long as you can read the language you're probably set.

and as chiisai_hana said, you can also try contacting a local japanese store. I've had good luck with Mitsuwa markets, and the people there are usually friendly and have helped get products for some of my friends from Japan if they did not have them in stock here.

When ordering from abroad, look out for hidden charges.

For instance if you are in the UK and order from outside the EU then you have to pay VAT & duty if the order comes to more than about £17. This will add around 20-25% to the cost of the order, and the shipping company may also make a charge (e.g. £10) for collecting the duty from you on delivery. Whether you get charged duty is somewhat random since Customs don't always check every parcel so you might find one arrives duty free and another has a huge charge to pay.

It's just the courier service used when I got EMS shipping. Since I wasn't home when they tried to deliver the package, it got sent to my local branch and I had to go find their location and pick it up.

My advice is to ask questions to the seller and make sure you're comfortable in knowing the procedure and what is expected on both ends. There have been some sellers I've dealt with who, due to language issues, I didn't feel comfortable dealing with because they didn't seem to understand my questions. Other sellers would only deal with me if my payment went through paypal in seven days or less (Canadian e-checks take 6-8 business days to clear).
