For basic photo editing (like getting rid of grain, red eye, power lines in photos)
as well as sig creation and gif creation? (Maybe throw flash in here too)

For every pro sig creator in here, what do you use? I'd like to put something on my mac/windows computer, but dunno if I should shell out the money or not.

If you want something free go grab GIMP. If you want something on the windows side (GIMP doesn't officially support windows but can run on it) then I'm sure PS elements would be able to do almost anything you want it to.

The full version of photoshop (or the extended version) are really expensive so if you don't need any of the extra features in them then try and stay clear of them.

Really any competent photo editing software (i.e. not paint) would work if you know how to use it.

Also I'm fairly sure that there is a similar thread that I had seen a while ago. Maybe it was closed down though.

For me I would recommend Photoshop CS4

Like the upper post saids

It's freakin expensive...

Also you must have a good CPU to run this program smoothly

This is what endless means by having a decent computer. Go here and look over the specs.
As to what I can tell if your going to use Photoshop CS4 be aware that the program can be your best friend at times and just shit on you the next. I'd go with it myself; I can't figure out GIMP for the life of me. I'm just too used to Photoshop. Oh and about elements it's not worth it, if you want something more reliable and complex go with Photoshop CS4; if you want something basic and simple Photoshop elements is the way to go. But that's your choice. In the long term, price is the main factor.

Well, as stated, I dunno anything about image editing period. I probably learn how to get rid of grain, parts of a photo I don't like, and some color editing in photography. (Nothing too much)

The main reason I would want either elements, CS4, or gimp would be to make sigs/icons/gifs for forums and so such. Nothing more.

I could put the money in to any software, I'd just like to know which is better for me now? (Someone who just wants to take a dip in the photo imaging stuffs. No point in buying a 50 caliber sniper rifle if you just want to shoot some cans right?)

That is exactly why I don't think you should drop $700+ on the full version of photoshop. First try downloading gimp and see if that will work for you. It's free so the most it would cost you is a bit of time and a little bandwidth. If you can't figure it out or it can't do what you want then look at a commercial option. Try out the trials of elements and photoshop and see whether you need all the extra stuff in the full version.

Personally I love using photoshop because it makes it easy while still giving you an amazing amount of power to create but the cost is a major factor. If you can find a copy of photoshop CS3 that someone still has then by all means go for that if you can get it for less since between CS3 and CS4 not much really changed and it will work just as well.

Im still using CS3, im use to it, so i dont plan on getting 4. But you should beable to find CS3 fairly cheap now since its "obsolete", just gotta know where to look.

From what i hear/are told, Elements is more for beginers and better for learning(but i wouldnt know that, mainly cause i just jumped right into photoshop when i started)

I dont really know what elements looks like, so i cant compare. But i do know most tutorials i read refrence photoshop, so at least get a photoshop brand.

Alright, I've gotten gimp, and plan to enroll in a photography class in one of my classes.

Thank you so much for all teh advice though!
